Thanked: 1I quit smoking last June. That means I was only an idiot for forty years. Or am I still one 'cause I use to be a smoker?
dictionary.com says this about the word idiot
A person of profound mental retardation having a mental age below three years and generally being unable to learn connected speech or guard against common dangers. The term belongs to a classification system no longer in use and is now considered offensiveLast edited by urleebird; 04-29-2006 at 07:28 AM.

Thanked: 8Maybe we are only idiots when we smoke, in between we are what ?.
Hey Urleebird I've read your bio..I was a bit too young for Nam but did do N.I. and the Falklands though. Smoked like a trooper..ha..ha..even took up the Gurka habit of mixing dried tobacco leaf and lime paste and using like chewing baccy without the chewing bit. Could smoke on stag then.

2) The fact that the North American society allows him to call me an idiot with impunity. Ofcourse, I would get ostracized if I started calling gay people, religious extremists or vegans idiots for their lifestyle choices. (*)
The real idiots are the ones who put on that smug look on my face and tell me that tobacco is bad for me and that I should quit, just like that. Do they think that I've never taken a health class in my life? Do they think that a strong physical/psychological addiction is so easy to beat? I put those people into the same category as those dirty, smelly unshaved people who scream that my soul will only be saved if I join their particular branch of a particular religion.
A forum mostly attended by mature men was the last place where I'd expect to be harassed for my non-criminal lifestyle.
(*) I am just providing examples. I have no problem with anyone who doesn't bother me directly, whether they're gay, religious or have dietary peculiarities.

I hate to go down this road, and I'll try not to preach....so here goes...I quit a nasty drug habbit, my worst addiction was morphine, but I had a number of others. I quit cold turkey and didnt sleep for almost 6 days...life was hell for a week, blah blah blah.
With all these great new methods and the help of Dr.s I think anyone who doesnt quit smoking is either lazy and/or doesnt want to quit bad enough. It reminds me of overweight people trying to lose weight, if they want to bad enough and they can, otherwise they just wont...believe me, they know they are fat. At any rate, for those of you that quit Im sure your family thanks you, it is a huge burdon on the rest of the family if they dont smoke...the smell, the thought of you getting lung or some other type of cancer like Im sure many of their friends hae. For those of you who havent quit...its your body, as long as you arent part of my family or blowing smoke in my face its none of my business.

I quit a nasty drug addiction as well, as well as cigarattes at the same time. I knew ahead of time I was going to do it, and part of my success was the preparation. Whenever I would take a hit, or light up a cigarrette for about two weeks prior when I was alone, I would look at the thing and just say out loud, or if i didnt feel like it I would think to myself every bad aspect of what I was doing. From the health issues, to family issues, to possible future issues that could come up. Your fighting two addictions , psychological and physical. The hardest to beat is the psychological. Use the method described earlier, for a couple weeks each time you smoke to build up anger towards the object. I know I know, it seems so silly, I already have enough anger you say. But trust me, this is a great way to get your mind prepared. After you quit, your mind will start reminding you of all the nice things you are missing out of. Your mind subconsciously has been conditioned into liking the object, because of all the good times you had with it. So you use this way to give yourself a couple of weeks into conditioning your mind into hating the object. It should get to the point where every time you light up a cigarette you have to force yourself to take a drag. The physical desire will still be there, but there should be a voice in your head going "wtf you piece of shit cigarette. you make me smell, your going to kill me, your emptying my wallet, and you physically addicted me." Stuff like that.
When you find yourself angry when you take a hit, or buy a pack of cigarrettes or needing to take a smoke break, you are ready to quit. Not guilty, angry. In my opinion, quitting things either has to be all or nothing. You dont quit gambling by only going two days a week instead of 5. Just as in my opinion, you dont quit cigarrettes by using niccotine patches. Your mind needs to feel like it is taking back control, and you usually dont get that with niccotine patches. You still feel like a slave to it.
I quit a hell of alot of drugs and a cigarrette addiction with this method. It was what worked for me. I knew deep down inside I was going to quit. If when you are lighting up a cigarette, or something else, you are secretly enjoying it... dont kid yourself quitting will be almost impossible....
This was my method, im sure it wont work for everyone. But you will know when you are ready to quit.
And if you dont want to quit, I dont care. I am not the smoking police, I think people have a choice to do whatever they want as long as it doesnt affect me.
Its life, let people live it how they want.
