Thanked: 1emrgency rooms, scars, serious st8 accidents
the thought ot using a straight razor tends to strike fear in the hearts of anyone i mention it to. I've been using nothing but a straight nwo for about 7 weeks and have only had minor nicks and bloodspots. In my very limmitted experiance it seems that really hurting oneself woudl take some effort or somethign like somone causeing the shaver to jump.
I did a google search about straight razors and accidents but could find nothing.
Does anyone here know of anyone that has had a serious accident with a straight, something that resulted in scaring or a trip to the hopsital or anything like that?
I found one poster on shavemyface that mentioned tryinga straight once and having a trip to the ER, thus far that is the only story i have heard.
I am jsut curious if anyone knows of any serious accidnts and how they may have happened.

I have been shaving with a straight for 3 months
and like you have had nothing worse than a few
blood spots. Didn't even need a steptic pencil.
For the most part this is just ignorance on the
part of the general public. I recall reading that
post on SMF a while back.
To be honest, I don't know of anyone that uses
a straight. I sometimes wonder if I'm the only
man in West Virginia that uses one. If there is
another, I would like to meet him. I would hope
that he is an expert honer who could teach me how
to hone.

Trust me...
Just pretend I know what I'm talking about here:
A computer mediated search of the English language medical journal literature (1950-2006) using the MeSH terms barbering or shaving with accidents, home or wounds, injuries, produced no hits related to straight razor shaving.
One might need to go back farther than 1950 but that will be a manual search. Yikes!

Thanked: 324We can thank Hollywood for that perception. Those Hollywood writers are Gillette's best friend.

Thanked: 0I've been using a straight for a little while now. As long as you take it slow and easy you'll be fine.
Smoking is more dangerous but millions still do it

I've been using a staright about three years now and the worst damage I've done was one occasion I was holding the straight in one hand blade up and crossed over with my other hand to turn the tap on and sliced my finger. The bleeding stopped after about ten minutes but it did leave a scar. Actually all my mishaps were during the first few months of shaving. I only nicked myself on the face once at the corner of my mouth which did leave a scar but that was my fault for not paying attention to what I was doing.
If you read my axioms of shaving and mind them you won't have any real problems. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Using the Pakistani left me with a couple of small scars but nothing since I started using decent blades.

Yes I have two scars one on each cheek after failing to lock the bathroom door and having my family surprise me. That is why I shave in the buff, the whole family knows and no one wants to see that, so they stay out.

Bill zinged himself across the adam's apple once before deciding he really ought to switch to his left hand when shaving that side of his face. You can find his post here. Brian (I forget his last name) also ended up with a sliced fingertip when he miffed the hanging hair test. He just pressed the tip back on and was typing later that night, no trip to the hospital necessary. So yeah, there have been a few accidents, but it doesn't seem they require a trip to the ER.
