got raped on ebay today -- twice
This is quite a day.
I opened my mailbox to discover not one, but two packages waiting for me.
What joy!
So I open up the first one, beautiful shiny razor, however, the edge has half a dozen chips of 1/32" or deeper. The auction description said "no scratches or chips". Very curious
So I wrote a message to the seller explaining the situation, after which I wanted to console myself by opening the second package.
Very beautiful razor... if it wasn't for the crack that goes from the edge about half-way to the spine, close to the heel.
The original auction description was "blade looks good... needs cleaning, otherwise very good condition". Very good condition? This thing is junk!
My current state of mind:

Always Always Always ask for close up pics, clearer shots, etc. and provide an email you don't mind them having (open a hotmail or yahoo act if needed.).
My philosophy has become, if they can't provide better pics then it's better to stay away.
If you can't remove the nicks, etc. maybe you can convert them to carving knives. Lotsa wood workers take old beat up str8 razors and convert them to wood carving knives. You might even be able to find a how to on the web.

Wow, sorry to hear you got boned! I just got a pipe razor in that I sniped for vlad (seller wouldn't ship it outside of the US). Paid $9 for it not counting shipping and it's in pretty good shape (albeit filthy). I'll put it back in the box and ship it off to vlad tomorrow morning. Not all sellers are crooks.

Come on....look at the bright side...those aren't chips...it's a serrated blade!

The second one is the real crime. I am reluctant to believe that the seller didn't see a crack that's about 1/3 " long and the resulting crooked edge. Not the only thing that's crooked I'm afraid. Oh well, I will see what he has to say about this. Never wise to judge these things prematurely.

I'm curious to see what the auction pictures of these razors looked like.
Care to share?

With the Hegener (chips), I can now see them in the original picture but given the carpety background and the item description it didn't look like that at that time.
The Tula (crack) really doesn't show.

Those were the original eBay pics or were those 4 pictures taken by you? If those were the original eBay pics the crack is very visible in the 4th one. Not visible at all in the 3rd pic though.

Sorry, I should've explained.
From the left:
pic 1 was on ebay, pic 2 was taken by me of the same razor (chips), a real shame btw, because apart from some rust/potential pitting it's a lovely razor.
pic 3 was on ebay, pic 4 was taken by me of the same razor (crack)

Yeah, those are some misleading pictures. Hope you didn't pay too much for them.
