Again, I'll have to volunteer, but unlike Nenad I'm sure I'll be able to come up with some in plain English

Well Ilija, Nenad's question is actually perfect for my next giveaway which will be geared towards the poor and underprivileged chemical biologists, metallurgists, and rocket scientists who are members of SRP

If we had someone to make up the question, I'd like to see the two of them go head to head

    Will that do?

    Hrm.... Divide by zero error?!

The questions are going to come from old posts? Won't that just mean you have to learn how to use the forum search function?

I do think it's a good idea, though we could always just blackball any jerk who takes something and we find out they don't need it, or they runnoft.

Hey, Josh, I think I missed the donations phase, but I'd be glad to help out a little with shipping costs or something. I'll send you a PM.

After reading through this thread so far, I'm still left with the nagging feeling that the winner is to be someone "needy." I don't want to feel that way about anyone here, and I'm sure guys don't want to be viewed that way. So, the only reasonable conclusion is that it's not a criterion that should be used here.

The only way to avoid any kind of stigma is not to identify the winner, and that kind of ruins most of the fun.

I don't have an answer on this, but I'd hate to see a "poor me" contest. The way it was done in the past may not have been great, but at least it didn't stigmatize anyone.

If the problem is people joining just to be in the contest, we have ways of handling that. If we are upset about people not thanking us, we can a make an advance thank you part of the application.

But seriously, I find the "needy" standard troubling. If we limit it to those who have been members for some time (people we know), maybe we can just trust them to be gentlemen and not grab items that others can use more. A simple rule could be made that people who have their own razors and shaving equipment should not apply.

    JL,

    My penny . . .

Just start a thread like "Who wants a new shaving kit giveaway?" and put a minimum number of posts as a requirement, like 20. Then you can review all their posts up to this point and give the razor away to anyone you deem the most "interested and engaged" in the art. I'd make the minimum 20 personally and chuck out all the "How do I strop?" and "How do I hone guys?" and focus more on the guys who post thier first post and say "Hey, I don't understand this pyramid thing", to me that shows some engagement.

Personally, I would make it a 'Pay it forward" only deal. You can keep the razor for only 45 days, at which point you must send it off to the next newbie with the same type of giveaway. Each newbie will send it off to the next newbie and so on. We can track it and give it away repeatedly.

Default Still Need Change For A Nickel

I'm with Joe. Criteria should be toward 'deserving' winners.
Here is a more detailed example of what I think might make a fun test:

    Contestants,
You are to answer the following questions to the best of your ability.
There are no limits to the answers you may give to these questions.

    1. What is the best razor and why?

    2. Except 'sharpness' what is the most important contributing factor to the most enjoyable shave?

    3. Who do you admire for straight razor shaving and why?

    4. Why should you deserve to win something?

    5. Choose someone else to win something and explain why you chose them.
It doesn't need to be someone in this draw

On the responses given, judges will grade from 1- 5 in the following categories:

    Creativity
    Ingenuity
    Detail
    Style

As you can see there are no straight answers possible and lots of room for interpretation. Give the judges the contestants' answers without the judges knowing who wrote them and that should eliminate any personal bias leaving artistic impression to win or lose the day.

I agree with making it some sort of competition that people could enter, rather than making it look like some sort of charity donation which could potentially embarrass the sucessfull winner.

Josh, I have a razor here I'd be happy to donate if you want it for your giveaway. It's a 5/8 Clements "High Speed" roundpoint, sheffield steel blade with black plastic scales. It has quite a lot of hone wear on the spine but it's pretty evenly worn and I think could have plenty of life left in it. I've got it pretty sharp but it would really need a honemeister to work on it to get the bevel right - it's beyond my skills right now! It's not shave-ready as yet.

If you want it please send me a PM.
