Thanked: 1371Ok. I have to admit to something here...
We faked the pictures from the MN meet.
It was all staged - like the moon landing.
What really happened was when guys came in and wanted to learn about honing, we shoved them all in the back shop and threatened to pour molten salt on them until they agreed to stop trying to learn and just give in and pay for honing services.
Then, before we let anyone leave, we made them pose for pictures and pretend like they were learning.
Sorry guys. I had to let the cat out of the bag.
I just don't think I could have lived with the lie anymore.
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

You know what, i rescind my previous post. I've been back over your threads and all you seem to do is act smug and criticise many experienced members advice but bring nothing to the table. You've been doing it for a number of days now.
Here's the thing, you say this is a perfect example of how SRP deals with views it doesn't like?
Well.. after you behaviour on here this is the same as poking a dog with a sharp stick and when it finally snaps at you saying "See? it's dangerous"
In short, You've been a D**k

There is a good reason for this, most people will not get the hang of honing 'pretty quick'. Nobody is stopping you buying a hone or two and giving it a try. There is a wealth of information on this website about honing. My view is that you are definitely seeing SRP in the wrong light.

Thanked: 2This is why I just learned myself, with the info here as a reference. I never felt I could participate much, because I don't have the SRP cookie cutter opinions. Why would I spend the time to post my opinion to help someone, when it would be followed by 10 post saying I am wrong? Who does that help? That would only lead a beginner to think there is only 1 way, and this is simply not true.
Oh, and tekbow, I retract the "inteligent" part of my post.

Thanked: 58I just thought I'd take this opportunity to thank you all again who've answered my questions in the face of opposing answers. If there has been any other site as helpful, encouraging, and gentlemanly as SRP I do not know of it. I also appreciate the LACK of advertisement from those wanting to burst out into this upcoming industry...ie, "for a meager fee, I'd be happy to hone that for you!", or "send me $5 and I'll hook you up with tons of preshave oil, cream, and soap samples." If anything, I've been offered stuff for free several times. Wait a minute, maybe I'm just a little overly cheery from winning second place in a straight razor giveaway this month that someone actually, cheerfully, selflessly DONATED!

No one says there's only one way, but there are ways that have worked for 100s of people vs. ways that may have only worked for a few individuals.
I was one of the ones who, shortly after starting to shave with a straight, went out and bought hones. I was told: "go for it, give it a shot" and other such things by no less than a MENTOR (gasp). This mentor also took the time to show me, in person, some tips and tricks about honing and restoration. I have spent many hours in his shop working on my razors and have also gained a friend in the bargain. Pretty cool, eh?
But, unfortunately, I've come to the conclusion that I probably should have waited on the honing aspect. I'm not getting great edges out of my honing efforts so far and it is frustrating. Added to the fact that I still need work on my technique, this ends up giving me some pretty rough shaves. So I've decided to use razors honed by more experienced honers, which saves my face, while I learn to hone on a couple of older razors. Hopefully I'll get it down, but I sure wish I had waited a bit before spending the amount I did on hones. That said, my enthusiasm got the best of me, as it often does.
The advice given on these forums is excellent. There is a lot of experience behind that advice and it is usually given freely and without malice or strings attached.
It appears to me that you, MCFLY49, are just being confrontational without cause. I still don't see the point of what you're saying, nor do I see evidence to support your claims.
I'm afraid my BS detector is going off.
