Wasn't this giveaway supposed to be for a poor college student, or someone else under similar circumstances? And aren't there any popping their heads in from time to time? I haven't kept up on the forum enough lately to know the answer, but I'd think that there has to be some around here. no?

My brother goes to Stout, seems like a nice place. And being in college definitely makes you think twice about buying something like straight razor equipment.

It was supposed to be for someone who didnt have money, but that sort of got thrown out the window so know one who was financially strapped would have to embarras themselve by letting anyone else know about it. I havent decided yet what I will do...its a nutty work week and Im going on way to little sleep to think much about it now, I'll give it some thought this weekend for sure thought. At any rate keep the suggestions coming, they can only help.

I'm still in favor of splitting up the lot and giving it as needed. My nominee would be best off with the hanger and the paddle, but if you don't have a razor, chances are you don't have a strop, so those would be the key components for ANY nominee. As for the razors, I can't see who'd really need them. Maybe someone with a very lean rotation (like 1-2 pieces).
Edit: If you can get your hands on more strops/paddles, you can make care packages for the troops.

I have no problem letting anyone know that I'm broke....the only reason I can still purchase something every now and then is because I try to sell razors. I have a whole big bunch lying around at home simply because I can't afford to keep them. Selling them has become my one source of income apart from my student loan.
And I've heard of quite a few people that were unemployed lately. So I don't think it's be a problem to find anyone who otherwise could not afford any of those very nice products......

Same with me. I have no problems admitting that I'm broke, but I have all that I really need and then some. Even if I feel the irresistable urge to add another razor to the rotation, $10-20 can always be scrounged up and I have a rotary tool, plenty of cleaning/polishing abrasives, wood, brass and sharpening implements
Edit: Or I could finish off one of the pieces on my project bench. Got some nice ones, including a TEW, W&B and I still have to decide which of the 2 remaining King Cutters I'll be keeping (one is going up for sale after a successful shave-test).

I may go with my original plan to give the bunch to a promising financially challanged newbie, in which case I will wait until the right one comes along. Of course suggestions to the recipient and type of giveaway are still appreciated

Thanked: 0I think the problem in my eyes would be the matter of finding who needs what. I don't think too many people would have a problem admitting money's tight. I'm not a college student, work at one, but finding an extra $50 is a matter of working more and justifying the expense against the bills or other goals such as moving out of New Jersey. I'm not ashamed to admit that at all. However laying out a statement that I am in need of x items and can't justify spending the money on them changes from statement of fact to a degree of begging.
As for the generosity of this place, it's simply astounding. I have to say I've grown to have a fairly dim view of people in the recent years, due in fair part to the fact I'm living in New Jersey and I keep being faced with selfish and greedy behaviors. Like getting lectured about why am I digging neighbor's cars out in the parking lot for free. I figured I was doing it because I'm young and can, and they are, simply put, not. But apparently I'm the fool for not charging them and taking advantage of a situation they didn't ask for. I've been a remember of these forums for less than a week now, and in that time I've seen so many cases where it's members have gone out of their way to help someone new, it honestly makes me feel like there's still some good people left. It makes me wonder if it's not just a matter of kindred spirits. Y'all share the passion of shaving in the ways of days gone by, might we all also share some of the values of days gone by?
I also would like to thank joshearl publically for his generosity and pacience in working with me in an effort to secure a pair of razors, one to shave with and one to learn to hone with. Thank you. Less than a month ago I owned zero straight razors in less than a month from now, I should have three good working razors and one possible.
