do you find the higher blade more comfortable, or forgiving? With my limited experience, I like the taller blade, it seems I have better control, even though its tougher to get into the areas on either side of the windpipe, and under the jaw line.

Yes, I find the large blades more comfortable against my skin and feel just right in my hand. The smaller blades feel too light and flimsy, though they do a good job, as well. So I guess it's the feel in the hands, mainly.
Scything works under the jaw line and using the heel carefully around the windpipe.

Thanked: 2591I like large hollows as they give better feed back on the cheek, but at the same time feel hefty enough in hand.
For me it is a lot about balance, smaller blades are lighter and thus lack the feel in hand. Heavy grinds for me do not provide enough feedback on the cheek, but feel good in hand. So for me the balance is as I said large blade with hollow grind, no heavier than 1/2 hollow.
When a larger blade has a nice wide tang (8/8 Henckels Friodur for example) that is comfortable to grip and the razor is a winner in my book.Stefan

Thanked: 247I cannot answer yet...every time I try a bigger profile, I have a new favorite.
Until I try one that is too big, I won't know the limits of my preference.
That said, there are other aspects of a razor that are as important as the profile (for me). Grind, toe shape, heel shape, shoulders, and the tang configuration.

Thank you gentlemen. It seems my own preference is being echoed here. I read a post where someone said, the big heavier blades, were preferred by the uninitiated or less seasoned user, and that a less tall hollow was a sign of skill and experience. Is there any "truth" to such a statement, or is it more of a personal preference thing again? To me with my beard, a 7/8 near wedge slips through my whisker. There is no singing with a heavy blade, but I have found the thinner shorter TI I have skip or slide over the hair.
Now I just had them honed by someone who knows way mor about honing razors, and the same TI cut nicer, but not as comfortable as the near wedge. My friends call me Bear.

Thanked: 1195The large blades are nice show pieces and are good for variety's sake for shaving, but 6/8 seems to be my preference nowadays.
