Actually, the real reason for those big blades back in the day is that they hold more lather, so the razor needs to be wiped off less frequently-- maybe two or three wipes for the entire shave. That is, if you believe what my 89 yr old barber instructor told me. I think that as the smaller and more hollow ground razors became more readily available, that most barbers realized that a few extra wipes on the towel was worth the added agility of the smaller blade.

Thanked: 2027Granted, they were production tools, but even today, the vintage big blades, the new made blades in the larger sizes,7/8+ out sell the 5/8s by a wide margin, why? no clue.

The largest that I have used is a 7/8. My favorite so far is a 6/8...

Thanked: 1263I'm one of those wierdos that likes the big blades...lol, 8/8 or larger for me. Don't get me wrong, nothing against the 5/8 that I have but there's nothing like holding a large piece of fine steel against your throat that gets the adrenalin flowing

Thanked: 368/8 or larger, 1/4- wedge grind for me is my preference as well. I like shaving with a 6/8 full hollow and get great shaves with it, but just love shaving with a huge meat cleaver.

Thanked: 2705/8 any hollow grind. When I was learning, I wanted a larger blade because the heaviness somewhat made up for my lack of skill. Since I learned how, I have preferred the smaller blade because it is more agile.

I rarely use anything smaller than 17/16. Almost all my blades are near wedges or 1/4 hollows.
