It sure would. Maybe I'll email the guy at Canadianivory.ca and see what he suggests.

If you have never dealt with Ron you will find him quite knowledgable and easy to work with. All of his products are bi-products of people living traditional life styles, the parts that otherwise would not get used. It is an interesting model.

Yes, he is a very nice man and I do like the story behind how they acquire their material.

Ok, waiting on Mr. Grays response.

Here's what I emailed Ron at Canadian ivory.

    ello there,

I have a question about a Walrus tusk that a few of us on a straight razor forum are going to be cutting up. We are looking to make razor scales from it, but have run into the problem of the tusk having linear splits along the length of the tusk. Some of those splits go as deep as 3/8 of an inch deep. We fear that cutting the tusk into slabs will result in low yield due to these splits, basically they will fall apart. Is there anything that can be done before cutting, that will hold it all together? Maybe stabilizing in a vac chamber or something similar.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks for your time.

    Andrew

    Here is his reply,

Those black cracks occur on all walrus tusks out side the gumline. I think your fears are well taken unless some redial action is taken particularly as the object will be going through a lot of drying.wetting cycles. Sure, I would suggest the vacuum chamber and resin route, although I have no experience personally doing that.

It appears as though a full gallon is all that's available. Another option is to leave it alone and display it..... just saying.

Yes, wish he was here,, I pulled a couple of brushes I have from him that are from Walrus, but the Walrus is "fossilized" , so I guess that is a big difference from what you have Mike ??
