So how do guys get a good one? luck of the draw? I think I'll take your advise as even at lower dollar cost if you have to buy several than there is no savings.

Understand the PHIG first, before you consider buying one. Read about them, then get only one, work with it & learn it. Many members have scored a good stone the first time around.

From what I understand, yes, it is just luck of the draw. Mine's been okay enough for refreshing my edge every couple of months, but I really feel like the Naniwa 12k will be a better finishing stone. Go ahead and go with what is trusted. I know I wish I had.

    But,,,
All my Nortons lapped very easily.
I have bought a full set of Nanis over the last couple months. They were all pretty flat, but had slightly recessed areas where the stickers were. Those had to be lapped out.
One time, in band camp, I shaved with a Gold Dollar razor.

I got a good one first time out. When I bought it, back in 08/09, I wasn't even aware they varied.

Later on, A friend in Hong Kong sent me one from there. It's has a nice wood grain look to it, It's a 12k and a great stone.
