Touché. I'd be wary of overhoning on that stretch of road.

You'd probably be safe enough with a gold dollar, if the one that turned up yesterday is anything to go by

No Laurens MY gold dollar/ victim razor. It turned up in it's little blue box all full of promise, but I could remove more hair by rubbing my hand up and down my arm, it isnt even at a stage I would call dull.
I did only get it to practice all the maintenance and resto tasks I will need to do on my nicer razors.
But if it does hone up (in the new year now, once I have some coarser hones, I might use it for travelling, oreeven give it away.

Aaah, I see. I love playing around with Gold Dollars and they shave well. I trashed one, happy I didn't do that on a vintage blade. There's one more lying in my closet. Soon...

Edit: Sorry, I missed page two.
Did I say 9 miles ? I meant 40 miles of bad road. Some of the older guys may get that reference.

Which grit would you recommend I buy for lapping with an ATOMA? I see some use 400 and some use 600 or even 1200. This would be my only lapping plate so I want one that works for all my lapping needs.

General rule of thumb is double the grit rating of the lapping plate you choose and that would be the coarsest stone you would want to lap with it.
the DMT8C is 325 grit so would safely do a 650 grit stone.
The boundaries can be pushed but you must go easy.
For an all purpose I would get the 400,
you could also use the 600 but go very gently and keep it under running water for a 1k stone.
I would not get the 1200 for general purpose.
Again I know people will chime in and refute this it is a rule of thumb,
just keep in mind you can drive a nail with a monkey wrench but it is not the best tool for the job.

So, first Laurens has his razor called fat, now you are insinuating I'm an old guy.

    A fine state of affairs...
