All excellent points, and using stones to lap stones is Old School and very rewarding. When using any of the Atoma or other diamond products, they will mellow out over time, become finer in feel and cutting action and can become excellent media to raise a slurry for final hoing on finishing stones before any polishing stages. So at some point the #400 will begin to act like an #600 while the #600 will break in and begin to act like a finer grit also.

I could buy two but it just feels like it is so much money to spend all at once. I started straight razor shaving a month ago or something like that and in the beginning it is a lot of purschases. It feels a bit better to get started with the most necessary things first instead of paying a huge amount of money in the first month.
Yeah you might be right about that. Maybe it's better to start off with the 400 after all.

Ludvig,
I have the 400 & 1200 Atoma. The 400 will and does work just fine. The Shapton DGLP (Diamond Glass Lapping Plate) is a 325 grit plate and is used for all the Shapton GS up through 30k.
Providing you don't have a rogue diamond sticking up and gouging the hone the light scratching from the 400 plate shouldn't affect your honing.
and Happy Honing!!
Best Regards,
Howard

A big thanks to all, everybody here are so helpful After the tips I have gotten I think I will start with the 400 only. After a while I might get the 1200 as well if I feel the need to. And if I need to get the finish a bit finer on some hones I will polish it with another hone or sandpaper
