I think before u start to master the coticule read planty of comments here about the advantage and disadvantage of this hone...If u use it for finishing, touch up, or somwhere at the range of an 8K hone it's okay, but maybe you need something else, and in this case it's only wasting time...At the early days I had lots of frustration when I wanted to get something from a hone, what I couldn't get:-)

I think you would be able to get a better edge off of the norton 4/8 quicker than the coticule. But I have 2 coticules and love using them. Using slurrys helps alot making it a versatile stone. Go with what you really want. Dont let anyone decide for you. In the end with practice both stones will provide fantastic shaves

I definitely see the pluses for the synthetic stones, but the natural aspect is what I gave in to. As far as buying more than one, i can't see myself doing that unless I master one! It will be a journey and I look forward to the eventual results

Long story short...I spent about an hour on my antique store razor that had a rough jagged edge at 100x on the coticule tonight. Did the unicot method verbatim, and I think I just might have a shave ready blade! Will test in the AM, but it performed equal to my other razors that were honed by the pro's on the HHT! Even if it is a rough, or subpar shave, it definitely boosted my confidence to have made such progress on what was a time neglected razor!

Couldn't have done it without everyone here at SRP's help though. You guys (and gals?) are the best!

    Default Learning on coticule?

Had my shave with it this morning and I'm very pleased with the results. Got a DFS, though at 430AM I haven't gotten a BBS with any of my razors. It was a pleasant, comfortable shave with an alum burn comparable to any of my other razors

I did not do anything with it off the coticule, just 60 on wool and 60 on leather and paired it with my Mitchell's wool fat soap. Kind of proud of myself!

The Unicot method works real well for me. If you have a BBW on the bottom, play around with that as well. I use the blue side with and without slurry before the plain water step on the yellow side, you can also try pyramid honing like on a N 4k/8k

Well Sir, you should be. Accomplishments like yours will make a man feel good about himself as well as his abilities. To each his own but for me I sure do like those Coticules. They develop a really nice edge for shaving.

    Well done.

Thanks for the nice words! Here's a pic of the coticule that I got. I'm not versed on the different types, but maybe some of you might have an idea what type it is. A very nice looking stone.Name: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1390528587.794814.jpg

Wow, those are two gorgeous rocks and big too. I’m not good at discerning layers except for a couple. There are materials over at Coticule.be on the different layers and if you go to the vault you’ll see pictures with descriptions. Your slurry stone is big enough to use as a touch up stone. I’m glad it is all working out for you.

    Regards

I was surprised at the size of the slurry stone...much larger than I expected. It is not lapped though, so I'm not sure using it to touch up would work out. As far as the larger one, I think the angle here makes it look large than it it. It is a 50x150mm, so not much bigger than a swaty.

I got these from the superior shave. Excellent service and super fast delivery!
