Thanked: 284I'm usually hesitant to claim victory if I happen to get a good edge on a razor, cause I know there's probably another one sitting there waiting to depress me.
However, through all the wonderful help on this site, one and one time with a fellow member and lots of practice, I'm almost ready to claim I've upgraded to "barely sufficient" honer.
Of the myriad of tests and observations that can be made to determine whether or not you are accomplishing what you set out to do on the hone, good ol water has been the most successful for me.
Dare I say I've been successful on 4 out of the last 4 when I paid close attention to how the razor has undercut water on BOTH sides, on every hone.
So my weeping is tears of joy, and that in turn provides the water I need on my hone so I can watch it being undercut
I'm sure there will be challenges in the future, but I'll bask in the glow of victory of a measly 4 razors for as long as I canI love living in the past...

Now it's my turn. Maybe I'll win. I've got pull with the judge-har har
I had my Nogura basking in the sun on the counter and the missus comes along and nonchalantly sweeps it off the counter onto the floor where it broke in two. So, I say what did you just do? She says do? I didn't do anything. I said you swept my honing stone onto the floor and broke it. She said, I hadn't noticed as she proceeds to kick it clear across the room. if she had been playing hockey she would have knocked the goalie out of the box with that kick.
Luckily it was just a slurry stone. If it had been an actual hone I'd probably be on death row right now.
And no I never did figure out why she did that.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Irony:
Reading this contest two days ago, thinking "that's a novel idea, I sure am glad I don't have any reason to enter", then discovering today that my beloved Shapton 12k "not for export" that I smuggled home from Japan has started cracking.
And to top things off, I can't seem to upload the images.

I've heard clear FlexSeal will do the trick on that shapton, Rob. Works really nice on glass, it appears.

Looks like you need a couple of hours on the hones Bigspendur, to help clear your mind & think back on your recent actions until you remember what the hell you may have done to cause such a response from SWMBO.
But be warned this could be a double edged sword, as your extended periods of time exerted on the hones, rubbing, patting, admiring, wiping & just keeping them wet in general for hours on end, may very well just be a possible reason for her seamingly unprevoked but very directed attack on an inocent hone.
or maybe you have not spoken clearly & pronounced the "N" when you said you were going to spend some time on the ho"N"es because with out the N it puts a whole new spin on the session.Last edited by Substance; 01-29-2014 at 09:32 PM.

My wife and I were watching a movie when she said "Someone is honing."
And she was right! [it was a knife]
She has listened to me looking for the perfect edge for so long it makes me laugh.
Tears of joy or madness, I don't know.
