I store my hones in the traditional way......

    In barrels!!
Not wood barrels anymore, but iron barrels do also fit. Like this one:

On the other hand - wood barrels leave a better smell!

I have one barrel for Arks:

Another one for thuringians, one for coticules,.......

Sometimes a wooden pallet is also sufficient:

Don't take life too serious - have fun.

    Best regards hatzicho

One can not be surprised that they smell if you using barrels from Agent Orange.

Yeah - I really like the smell of single islay malt oak casks. But they are hard to find and even more expesive then thuringian hones. Also it is hard to get rid of the filling of these casks - evening for evening hard sessions - just to get the casks empty for hone storage.

Today I was thinking to take picture of my storage but after 7 hours of lapping I really could not be bothered.

Default How do you store your hones?

Unlike a good many gents, I keep my small stash in a travel box..a small tool box I picked up at Harbor Freight. Left to my druthers I would have a dedicated honing desk, but SWMBO thinks otherwise and since I already have a floor standing cabinet in the bathroom filled with software, brushes and DE's, I am inclined to comply with her wishes.

In execution, it actually works well. In the box are Shapton Glass 1, 2, 4, 8 & 16k stones, a Zulu Grey in a custom box, tape, sissors, loupe, Sharpie, DMT card, spray bottle and a stone holder. I can set up shop just about anyplace and need only a clean towel.

That said, on the top shelf of my closet are a nice natural combo a Coti, a few DMTs, a Barbers hone, Lyle Surgical Black Hard Arkie and and my J-Nat setup. I don't use them as often as the Shaptons.

When I decided to attend the Kansas City Meet, I needed a safe way to transport my modest collection of stones. I found the Porter Cable box in a corner, the box was empty, the cordless drill had been discarded years ago. I found a product called densified batting at a reasonable cost in several thicknesses. I used an inch on the bottom and the lid and cut a 3 inch pad for the stones.
The Tupperware is mainly for soaking the stones, but with a cut up bubble envelope, I can safely pack the wet stones for transportation and allow them to dry at home before putting them back in the Porter Cable box.Name: pc.jpg

isnt that So's dad's house in Tokyo

    some of it, at least

my "Maruichi" brand Nakayama Suita came from there

i have only 4 or 5 'good' Jnats, which i keep stacked in [or on] a folded nappy, pic later

often-used artificials are mostly in holders which can also be stacked, no nappies needed

and what i'd like to see pics of is Shosui Takeda's stones-shed, which he mentioned once in an email to me

Just got one of these off eBay for $12. It holds my SS1k, SS12k, Norton 4/8, Gok20K, 2 DMTs, various tools, metal polish/wax, diamond spray bottles, tape, oil....just about everything. If you don't have a permanent honing station this can be a good solution.

Size: 45.0 KBI have been keeping in shoe and cigar boxes but the shoebox of hones was in garage that's about 20 degrees, so just took out and will keep inside where dry and warm. Is it ok to keep them touching other stones just sitting in a box? Not worried about breaking them so much as the just sit there under the bed. I see many of you bubble wrap and put in cloth etc. is that just for transport or should they all not touch each other?
