Thanked: 5I was under the impression that he doesn't strop for customer razors either. I know current hes been experimenting with some crazy compounds on hard backed surfaces, I sent him a bottle of .050 poly to try out. can't wait to hear how he likes it.

Yeh, he mentioned some things about compounds and sprays. I'm not a spray/compound guy. Steel, stone, leather for me. What caught my attention was saving slurry from the Zulu Grey and turn it into an application for polishing while stropping. I got my Zulu from him too. He also mentioned taking a course on metallurgy and forging steel. He said he's going to start a custom line of straight razors, like Mastro Livi, though more affordable.
Remember, so much about this hobby is about what works for you, what interests you. So much is just opinion beyond certain basics/fundamentals. That's why I like steel, stone, leather, and the dead badger.Last edited by Longhaultanker; 07-19-2016 at 08:50 PM.
A little advice: Don't impede an 80,000 lbs. 18 wheeler tanker carrying hazardous chemicals.

Thanked: 5I bought the sprays and stuff for playing with knives and chisels, but razors were my last edged tool I got into, and naturally they carried over decently well. He has asked me to come to some of those forging classes and I really want to, but they are sorta far for me, and i'm poor with a really crappy car... maybe if I didn't have so many hones I would have a nicer vehicle!
It IS what works for you, but sometimes I want something that works for someone else, to work for me : )

Thanked: 246To me, not using a strop is just silly. This means that you'll be going to the hones for touchup quite a lot more often rather than just stropping. I've seen some pretty negative reviews of that 30k unstropped edge from Howard as well on Reddit as I recall - more than one guy mentioned the edge not lasting long at all, failing mid-shave even in one case.

My favorite on the 30k was a member posted a guy selling a Shapton 30k, the guy was using it to sharpen the blades on his lawnmower, said he could set a level on his lawn and have the bubble dead center, just the way he liked it - flat, even and perfect, but he'd found something that he liked better....

Thanked: 5.... what?
Am I reading this wrong? I barely understand what that means. So the guy was selling a 30k stone, that he was using to sharpen his lawn mower blades? He liked the stone because he could cut his grass level with it, and have a bubble in the middle of his lawn? And after all that he wants to sell it? Sorry if that sounds mean, but i'm pretty confused on that one.
