Thanked: 90Ok Thuri wins by a hair.
very similar to my best coti, but a bit closer shave. Feel and ease were about the same, but I guess it is just a bit sharper. Maybe a little smoother.
I took my early stub tail James Johnson silver steel that I had maxed on my best coti and did thirty laps on water only on the thuri. Then 80 strop leather only. Very nice shave. I say having a small thuri in your collection is well worth it.
unlike a coticule though I will probably just stick with this one. Oh and the size is fine it just looks small compared to what I am used to.

Thanked: 433(I haven't read the whole thread so sorry if this has be mentioned)
The consistency of a Thuri seems to be very good stone to stone where the Coti's can vary a lot. I've never meet a Thuri I didn't like but have used a few Coti's that were to coarse to be called a finisher

Thanked: 90I love my coticules, but some are better than others. I haven't had one I did not like. I have only 4 all are good some are great. What I learned from this is that coticules are great for turning old blades into great shavers, but thuri adds an additional finish to the edge. They actually should be used together for the best result. The thuri just take the smooth coti edge a bit further and a little closer. I was also suprised by the fact that you shouldn't use a thuri edge on canvas. Still don't know the physics of it I just know it works. It was mentioned to me in this thread, than when looking for an old thuri non escher for the best price I found a Larkin boxed I wanted. Didn't win, but in my research of this thuri it stated in the instructions to never strop on canvas leather only.
oh and your point is one more thing I learned. I didn't need an escher just a thuri.Last edited by rideon66; 05-25-2015 at 03:07 AM.

Glad to hear you got this sorted out.
A wise member once told me "90 percent of what we do is test"
Truer words have never been spoken.
Different era and location steels perform best with specific hones and grits.
That's where the testing and these members come in so handy, those who came before us have already sorted it out.Your only as good as your last hone job.

Thanked: 90Ok so I love the wedges, but I do have my Grandfathers hollows so I tried one tonight. Now I do like this hollow only it never liked me. It is a CaseXX around 1925 or so. It was always really sharp and a bit harsh even off my coti. Well the thuri has solved that one too. Yes I officially love this coti to thuri combo.
Thankxx everyone for all the help.

Thanked: 96I just bought an Escher. I use Shaptons, Naniwa, Suehiro and a Jnat. Everyone is talking about the edge, but what about the smooth shave? I can get a edge that cuts arm hair mid way or the HHT but doesn't shave smoothly. I have a chromium oxide and the Jnat finisher that makes the shave smoother. My next purchases will be a Arkansas Blake stone. Just keep looking for the perfect edge and the smooth shave.
