lol your right as hes flipping the razor he does a circle transitioning to the other side. I guess if you used tape you wouldnt wear any metal on back and sides. I think the stroke looks stylish and is probably useful if you want to get into a honing rhythm but again the effective parts of the stroke where edge is actually on stone is just X.

Great story and a stone to treasure. The barber I know uses coticules that were his fathers also a barber. The stones he uses are very old and dished so as the ends are near full width and the center is nearly through the cream layer. Still his go to hone.
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

I guess the only benefit from it that i see, would be in the first video.
In that vid. When he did the fancy transition flip. It dropped the slurry back in front of the blade, readying for the next pass

That is exactly what it is designed to do, in fact when I teach it at the meets that is the way I explain the motion so it makes sense. X drop the slurry come around pick up the slurry X drop the slurry etc: etc:

Works with Barber Hones and lather too

That is a lovely gift to receive nice one
I've finally got myself a coticule combo stone, still learning its potential great stones and an informative story... Strange, (without actually seeing the barber in action) the figure o 8 movement reminds me of the way I was taught to hone chisels by my old carpentry teachers,, perhaps it's an old school English or European method?
Interesting I didn't think it could be applied to razor sharpening but in skilled old hands,, I guess even a figure of 1,2,3 could do the job
