Is this the only razor you have felt this with?
i tried two razors tonight and felt it on both.

I will get some new paper tomorrow - I will lap with the DMT - its not that old, then do 800 1000 and 2000. see if that helps.

I wouldn't even bother lapping with sand paper...... I only use my DMT 325 on my coticules...... Which works fine.

If you have a smaller coti or a slurry stone..... Use that all over the coticule too.....after lapping it with the DMT.

Do you have any pics of the coticule in question?
Is it over there or over yonder?

If it's one of the newer vein coticules from Las Petas - I have heard this same thing from several guys now. Reports are that it doesn't hurt the edge though.

Regardless of what you used to lap it, the best thing to smooth out the surface is your coticule bout.

I have no idea what 'vein' it's from but it's a brand new stone from Ardennes.

Indeed, some of the newly mined layers in Regné especially Les Petas and even more La Veille Rouge feel a bit hard and rough compared to the oher veins, especially compared to the smooth layers like La Veinette.
Apart from the honing feeling, they are great hones though and good finishers. It is just the honing feeling that needs some getting used to.

But it could also be a problem with the coticule. Some phoos might be helpful....

Don't get carried away with it. It should not take much more than a normal slurrying to smooth it out. If you decide to do a lot more than that, then at least save the slurry!

I do not have a coticule that feels excessively rough but I think it certainly is possible given what ekretz said about this particular vein. It is likely that the feedback from this hone will not be altered significantly by any type of surface prep.

I have a coticule that feels like that too, haven't done much honing on it since it feels so weird
I should test it some time

I've lapped it quite a bit, but that doesn't seem to change anything

A scotch brite sponge is good for pulling grit from a stone and smoothing it a bit, on synthetics it is good for a quick refresh of a loaded up stone.
