Some folks go after new stones that come out to see what they are about. Some other folks just can't hone well and think the next big thing that will somehow magically make the edges good is the next new stone out there.

There is no excuse for what the video showed. When selling a hone advertised as 12-15k as a razor finisher, with the claim that every stone was tested, there can be no excuse.
I want to know why are you defending ILR? Are you shilling for them?

Yeah there is an excuse but I was told not to go around telling folks so i'm not going to on an international forum.
    What does that even mean?
See you guys are so freakin crazy about this i'm ganna get accused of "shilling"
    hahah.
You have your opinions and I have mine.
I'll attempt to be mature and leave it at that. Happy honing everyone!
    PS: be more open minded.

Asking a question is not an accusation, the victim card does not get a pass here.

What other natural finishing hones have you used extensively?

If it is something relatively easy to source, I don't blame them. You tell where it comes from and folks can find it, guess what? Their out of a job! But you are welcome to go out and try your own rocks haha
This is solely just food for thought and I'm not trying to put anyone down but this is the reason I would like to know where a Stone comes from. A friend of mine is a rock collector and years ago he almost went to jail for collecting stones at his local Creek and selling them. Now I can't remember why he didn't go to jail for this ( might have been because he was 13) but I know that someone tried to press charges on him and all his buyers for stealing rocks. Personally I would like some traceable or at least legible proof that what someone selling was collected legally. Now as for the stone in the trend, I hold no comment. I would like to try one but I'm in no way willing to Shell out the money for it... but that's just me.

One thing from the video that Keith mentions is that he doesn't know if the ILR is slate, I am no geologist but by looking at it its pretty clear it is slate or shale, the definition of slate is a metamorphic rock formed from shale, shale is defined as a sedimentary rock. A good razor hone only has to do with if the particular sediment was very fine to begin with and did it morph into harder slate (which seems to be the trick here) . There are many slate quarries in North America. Vermont Slate is very fine grade slate, many use it at a razor hone although for some reason it is unpopular to brag about. I have been experimenting with slate from Kentucky and a few other locations. We have a slate quarry here in Oklahoma that has some good metamorphic hard slate I have been planing a visit for testing. Slate/shale is found in just about every part of the world. It is also my opinion they should be proud of where they get it, I know if I did find good slate at the quarry in Oklahoma and started 'OLR' Okie La Redneckio, I would be proud to say it is quarried in Oklahoma and put a big old red stamp that says so on it.

I have a little video on youtube where I destroy some razor hones, I fracture some shale, some slate, a vintage Thurigan, and an ILR Slurry stone. (although I lost the video of the ILR, so it never made it to youtube.)
The ILR and the Thurigan fractured the same, which 'could' point them to being a metamorphic slate (we know the Thurigan is), but only a geologist can give the final answer as some shale can act the same, just way too many factors.

As it happens the purveyor of these rocks was a member here. At that time he made posts reviewing these stones without revealing that he was the seller. This was discovered and he was banned for his unsavory approach to drumming up business. Here is the relevant post on that final decision by the staff, and this thread is now closed. Even bad publicity being desirable, SRP doesn't wish to give this forum as a platform for these questionable stones.
