Thanked: 6New Arkansas stones...
I recently bought a full set of Dan's Whetsone hones--soft, hard, and surgical black--in 8x2.5". I just honed on them for the first time this evening. It was a really enjoyable experience. I took a shave ready GD208 and killed the edge and took it through the whole 3-stone progression. The edge came out killer. I think I'm going to like these stones more than any system I'm tried yet because they are natural, they originate in the USA, and they have a reputation of producing great edges. The shave test comes tomorrow morning.

After you posted this I hone one of my Dovo razors on a black Arkansas. I use a translucent for my finisher normally, but your idea sounded fun.

Thanked: 7I'm really excited about my surgical black coming in Monday. I have a soft ark that fits AMAZINGLY in my progression. Looking forward to taking the time (Please, God, let Dan's stone be flat!) to lap the stone, burnish the stone, taking my time to learn the stone, and experience what some are telling me are unbelievable edges.
Looking forward to hear the shave results from both of you!
If anyone of you have tried a coti edge—how does a arkansas edge compare? Just curious, your impressions. What am I in for?

All three stones the black Arkansas, translucent, and the coti shave good . I have tried the coti. I have a small 4x2 little coti. I shave with the black last. I am not a good person to compare stones I seem to get a good shave each time. The only difference I can point to with a lot of confidence is that my little coti hone is softer and yellow. Ir will do what it was sold for in my opinion.

Thanked: 6I just got rid of a little piece of coti about the same size. I liked it pretty well. I got good shaves off it. I can already tell I'm going to like Arkansas stones better.

Thanked: 7My SB arrived today! She's gorgeous!
... But not flat
I held up a very worn dmt C against both sides, and held it up to the light. Yep, I could see light coming through.
I have som SiC powder arriving soon, Itll be a while before I post any shave results

Thanked: 6What brand did you go with? 1 of my Dan's was absolutely flat. 2 of them were ever so slightly out. I'm guessing maybe .001 over the length of the stone. I'm not going to lap mine over that. I hope you get good results on yours and that they turn out to meet or exceed your expectations. Mine do already. I just honed a little Solingen Trusteel this evening and like the previous razor it was clipping hanging hairs right off the hone before stropping. Keep us posted on your progress.

Thanked: 481My question - is the other side the same, or is it flatter? Call me lazy, but I tend to start with the flattest side because it'll allow me to get the stone up and running quicker. I can always pick at the back side a little here and there until it's right.

I would measure the thickness down both sides of that stone and see if you are really losing more than a 16th of an inch of thickness in the middle of your stone. How do you know what ever you are using to calibrate the flatness of one stone with is actually truly flat itself ?
