Try using a brass wire brush with your clenser. Made a huge difference when I was no longer getting much results with normal methods. Wouldn't use it all the time but good for every now and then
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Thanked: 3795No I don't think a brass brush will hurt it. In fact, I THINK I remember that DMT recommended using a brass brush for cleaning.
EDIT:
So I guess that I am mistaken. Below is the cleaning section of the DMT FAQ.
How do I take care of my diamond sharpener?
Important: Always clean the tool to be sharpened before you sharpen it.
When you first use your DMTĀ® sharpener, the diamond surface will seem aggressive in nature; the diamond sharpener will smooth after initial sharpening with no impact to long term performance. Your first few sharpenings are the break-in period.
To maintain your sharpener, you should clean after each use with water and wipe dry. After several sharpenings, use a mild kitchen abrasive cleanser and a nylon scrub brush (an old toothbrush works well too). Make sure the sharpener is dry before putting it away.
Storing your DMT stone: Always put away dry and store in a dry area. Use leafing (paper towels, cloth, plastic storage bag) in between your bench stones to prevent abrasive sides from rubbing."
EDIT of EDIT:
Well, I knew I remembered a brass brush involved somehow.
HERE is an old thread that shows the old DMT cleaning kit that included a brass brush.
Long story short, eventually, a brass brush CAN be used to clean your DMT.Last edited by Utopian; 06-24-2016 at 01:04 AM.

Thanked: 98I get the "Staining" from my diamond plates, BUT, I think it is the nickle and other metals used to hold the diamonds in place possibly reacting with the man made hone binders. I have a large jewelry steam cleaner and a huge ultrasonic, with heat and though I've used both to clean hones and plates, I still get the staining on my nortons when honing.
Best of luck getting the result you are after.

SRNewb,,, I think we have two problems here;
1. The Arie oil stone residue is easily removed with many of the solutioned mentioned.
2. The problem I have is not old from an India or old Arkie, its a gray stain from most of my DMT's. ,, I don't know what the stain is made of, so I have a hard time removing it. Actually the only way I remove it is with the "clean" old DMT.
If we knew what was causing the DMT to release gray stain, then we could find a cleaner.

I will try to talk to a person at DMT tomorrow & ask him/her what exactly we are dealing with here.
