    In a way you're better off never shaving off of the 8k. Once your honing becomes really proficient, and you shave off of the 8k, you realize that you didn't need any higher grit hones, but you would be fine if the 8k is all that you had !
    Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
