Thanks, Pete! Yes, truly a lot of fun to be had here.

These are the first translucent Arkansas stones I've ever had so I am really looking forward to learning what they have to teach me. So far they have taught me that they don't take kindly to lapping! How the heck does anyone lap these buggers?

From what I've read most recommend SIC and a cookie sheet if I'm not mistaken. I am new and could be wrong.

In one sense I am jealous... I'm still learning my hones, so in another sense I'm grateful I didn't stumble across that lode. I'd be lost for years. I've seen plenty of intelligent posts from you; I have no doubt you'll be sharing your new adventures with us soon. Congratulations.

I just sent the two translucents to Dan's for flattening/lapping. I called them and they quoted me a very reasonable price, especially considering I haven't got much money into them at this point. There were gouges from chisels it looked like, pretty hard to try to get out with the limited time and resources I have at home. There's only so much rubbing a stone back and forth I can do before throwing in the towel.

My usual method for flattening Arkansas stones was not very effective on the translucents. That is, to wet a 8 x 16 x 2 concrete slab, add sand and rub. It was clear that it would have taken days for just one side. Also, this method was causing tiny chips along the edges and I didn't want that to continue. I was going to try the SIC powder, and in fact I ordered some to do it, but today I just said screw it and put them in the mail.

So, in a couple weeks I should have them back good as new. I will not hesitate to send them out the next time I find very hard Arkansas in need of refinishing.
