I will have to go with your observations of 2 layers as you are holding the stone not myself.

I have seen when you pull an old oil stone out of a wooden box it seems like there are 2 different layers but it is caused by the use of oil on the top and the bottom is cleaner from being protected by the box.

That was my impression from the pictures.

These uneven patches are a trace of oil, and a straight line is, in my opinion, a combination of layers

From the above pictures, the lighter material looks like plaster. I've read that sometimes plaster was used to set stones in boxes. I bet it could be used to make a stone sit higher in it's box also. Love mystery stones! Nice score!

Turkey stone were made harder by being «cooked» in boiled milk or oil (I don’t remember that part)

Maybe it’s an interesting exemple of half-hardenned hone.

The saw lines go from one layer to the other.

If you were going to set it in the box with plaster why would you cut it before?

Fill the hole with plaster and set the stone.

Or if it was an origional box to match the stone just cut a shallower hole.

I think it is not plaster. Definitely too hard for plaster, And on both sides are similar "patterns" darker lines.
