    Default Old stone ID

I bought a stone at the flea market. Someone used it earlier with oil.
One side evidently harder than the other. In the first picture right after the purchase, then during the cleaning and equation. What could it be?

Both sides scream Turkey stone (Cretan stone) from what I can tell.

I have no ideas for ya but thats a great looking box it came in. Shows its age and holds the stone just right. Cool! Put a blade on the stone and give it a go. You should be able to figure out where it belongs in your line-up even if you cant figure the proper name of it.

    I'll second the Turkey/Cretan nomination.

How are you determining that one side is harder than the other?

Oiled and burnished on one side would make it cut different.

The difference was perceptible during the stone equation.

How are you measuring the stone equation?

I do not measure, but I feel that one side rubs easier and the other harder

That makes me think it could be from burnishing and the use of oil on one side and not the other.

You may be right that this oil influenced my feeling by the equation. It could also be misleading that on the edge of the stone you can clearly see two different layers which could suggest different hardness .... Before the equation, I boiled the stone for three hours to remove the old oil.
