I bought the Chosera being I had planned on restoring razors. A few years later I ran across a deal I couldn't pass up that had the same stone in a lot of stones. So now I have two. I will never work my way through the I use but just encase I drop it or it breaks, I have a backup.
But as it's been said, Unless you plan on restoring or honing razors for years I think the SS is just fine. I've also got the glass stones and they do well too. I just cant make up my mind. It's just Sharpening, right?

I've never tried the Naniwa Chosera line, let alone "the 1k." It mostly has had to do with cost and size, and that other hones seem to do the trick in its place. But I have been curious given the hype.
So why would I want one if other hones will suffice? One reason would be that it is splash-and-go. I love my Suehiro 1k/3k combo; but as it is a soaker and takes forever to dry out, this can be a drag when traveling.
As for size and cost, "the Chosera" measures 210mm x 70mm x 20mm and costs around $80 USD. I mostly hand-hold when honing razors, so 6" x 2" and smaller suits me fine. No need for me to fork out eighty bucks if I'm just going to be thinking about chopping it down. In its splash-and-go place and in wanting to keep things small, there is the 6" x 2" DMT extra-fine (used judiciously) at around $45 and the 160mm x 37mm Shapton G7 11.5 micron (which I haven't tried, although I do like their subsequent hones in the series) at around $45-$50.
Enter the new "Naniwa Pocket Pro Stone," which at 1k, weighs in at 135mm x 45mm x 15mm at around $40. Here, I am tempted to cry out, hallelujah! It seems that the clouds have finally parted for us hand-holders and that a new era, along the lines of the 5" x 2" barber's hone format of old, is about to begin.
All this to say that if you want to dip your toe in the water with "the Chosera," a smaller, cheaper option is available. Still haven't tried one myself.Last edited by Brontosaurus; 06-04-2022 at 05:30 AM.

I just went to Amazon.ca.
Surprisingly the 1K Gouken Arata is $115, the full size Chosera is less at $106.
Although I am very tempted to get the Chosera, mainly because I think I have sad. I won't buy it until I have seen my doctor or joined a support group that doesn't suggest I get it.
I have other important things on my list first anyway, Blue Magic Metal Polish, Dapping set, more rod and washers, scale blanks, sanding drum for my pillar drill set up, razors to have a go at restoring.
After I get those I have my Naniwa 1K SS and a 1k Norton so I suppose I have enough to spend my pocket money on before i get another 1K, besides, I have a hankering for one of those Ancient Sea Jasper jobbies and maybe a La Luna.- - Steve

OK, just googled it, duckduck go actually.
It seems that ancient ocean jasper is pretty much marketing hype although jasper does seem to be highly thought of by some.
I believe @Bouschie uses jasper so perhaps he can weigh in with his opinion. I've bought a few razors from him and his edges are excellent.Last edited by STF; 06-04-2022 at 02:08 PM.

Thanked: 44The Naniwa 1k is ok but it clogs almost instantly so constant dressing is required.
The Shapton does not do that and leaves a MUCH better finish.
