I am guessing that all of the very high quality stones that fetch a high price that would be easy and cheap to mine have already been mined and sold.

I know of at least one hone quarry in the Sonneberg area in Thuringia that was filled with rubble in the communist era. So that hole could be very stinkin' indeed!

Most old quarries, especially the larger ones have this very disagreeable habit of filling up with water especially if they dip below the water table. Pumping out the water and keeping it out can be rather expensive.

Ask Tony Miller. He did sell them in the past and may still sell them.

I do still sell the "Original Thuringens" when I can get them (have a few now) I did also sell the "Natural Waterstone" which is actually from the Hunsrueck region, not Thuringen. These look and feel different than the Thuringens and seem to be fast cutters. These are also the ones which have both pyrite and hard glassy inclusions in them and stones I no longer sell for a variety of reasons.

I have examples of the Manufactum (Mueller) Thuringens as well as the "Original Thurigens" sourced by MST and they are different. The "Original Thurigens" are still a less grainy looking stone and I have yet to find one with any inclusions, pyrite or otherwise and I have had 20 or 30 go through here in the last year. These have been represented to me by my distributor as either vintage NOS stones or newly sawn from older quarried stock much like the Scotish Tam O'Shanters. There are also newly quarried stones from the same region which may explain the ones with pyrite inclusions, or they cam from a different quarry.

To add to the confusion there are at least three abrasive stone sellers in Thuringen that have the last name Muller/Mueller.
