This is a great thread IMHO. I hope that this can shed some light on any issues that people may be having.
I know that in reading the posts that I have had a few light bulbs go off.

I use Shapton pro. 1k, 5k, 8k. Lately I have been using my old King 8k for fun, and sometimes the 6k
I usually finish on nakayama asagi, or vintage coticule. Stropping on home made leather and hemp canvas web strop. (though i dont use the canvas all that often.)
If that's not it, I will use an aoto, shinden suita, asagi progression

Thanked: 1903Well, I am still very new to honing. I am the proud owner of http://straightrazorpalace.com/buy-s...ing-setup.html, an Escher acquired from gugi and a BBW/Coticule combo. I also have a pasted strop with Dovo red/green pastes, and a few strops.
I have found the Norton pyramid to deliver excellent results: Setting The Bevel And Honing With The Norton 4/8 Pyramid - Straight Razor Place Wiki. But for some reason, I recently switched to the Belgian, and it's somehow more fun, not least because I like holding the stone in my hand better than having it flat on a desk. But, as I said, I only honed 20 or so razors - and I certainly would not call of the results successes...

sometimes a DMT C 325 and/or F 600 if it needs heavy work...
DMT D6E 1200 or WME
DMT D6EE 8000 or W4EE
one of half-a-dozen barber hones
sometimes (≈30%) a lapped Spyderco UF
often (70%+) newspaper on glass
leather strop
I don't use pastes, except for 0.5 chrome oxide (on a leather paddle) by request.
