Thanked: 235I finally found a hone in Thailand.
While driving home from a work seminar (most of which I managed to sleep through) the bus carrying myself and all the other teachers stopped at a little road side market. After buying copious amounts of sticky rice for my family this hone caught my eye. It cost a grand total of 70Baht which is less than $3.00 AUD. For that price if it turns out to be no good I haven't lost much. At a guess I think it might be similar in grit size to a norton 8K. But I'm just guessing. I'm not sure what sort of stone it is, but I think it might be either a granite or some sort of sand stone. It was on a shelf next to granite mortar and pessles so I'm assuming its granite too.
I'm planning to lap it this weekend and then see what it can do to the edge of a razor.

As a rock climber I can tell you that granite is very unforgiving. I climbed on some granite in Montana that had so much quartz in it that you did not even need shoes, unless you valued your toes. Literally it was like climbing on a cheese grater. Alternately I have climbed on granite that was slicker than snot on a doorknob.
So you could have a 220 or a 4K. Or it could be the start of a new Water of Ayr, Thai style.

Hi Nathan,
It's hard to tell from the photo's, but it looks a bit coarse. As you've handled it i guess you're in a good position to judge it though. Whatever it turns out like, i'm sure you can fit it into the sequence somewhere!

Thanked: 3795See how desperate we are to find the next great rock!
Good luck with that one. I'm doubtful you're going to match an 8k it'll be interesting to see what happens with it.
