Thanked: 171What I'm saying is.. wouldn't doing the extra 5-10 strokes in the first place, while you're right there, take maybe another 20 seconds, and then you won't ever have to go back to the stones. You say 10 strokes works most of the time and another 5-10 brings the ones that it didn't work on into line, so if you never want to hit the stones again, I argue why not do the 15-20 in the first place? See what I mean? Is there some reason why not? Like maybe you hone so many razors that another 5-10 potentially unnecessary strokes makes you have to lap sooner and/or wears the hone out faster?

Thanked: 156When Lynn says strokes he means laps.
Personally, it takes less time and effort to go in sets of X rather than sets of 2X. Your essentially doubling the time it takes and wear on the hone by doing twice as many strokes as is necessary.
Less is more.

Thanked: 171I realize he meant laps... I was just saying, doing 15-20 strokes instead of 10, we're talking seconds worth of time, and at that grit level, not a lot of wear, right? I suppose a waste is a waste, and of course if 10 didn't work that often he would have modified it by now anyway.
What I was personally hoping to get out of it was whether it was a bad idea for the average person to do more strokes than necessary. I didn't know if he somehow got the absolute best results by doing the bare minimum number of strokes vs a few extra. (Not dozens extra, just the 5-10 or so).

Thanked: 1195For me, personally, this is what I had in mind: I already have a coticule, and a fairly hard one at that (it works great for touch-ups). When my razor(s) start to show signs that they need a trip to the hones I would start at 15 to 20 laps on the coti and then increments of 5 laps thereafter unitl I'm satisfied the coti is maxed out. Follow up with 10 laps or more on the Naniwa/Shapton, and then possibly some chrome-on-balsa before hitting the strop.
All my edges have been established by honemeisters, so I'm just maintaining an already decent edge. Does this sound reasonable with my planned set-up?

I have both stones and prefer the Shapton as I can go from the 16k to the 30k and be done.

Thanked: 156Order is in with SRD. I'll have findings within a week after receiving the stones.
I'll also be offering some free honing to celebrate for the summer as well as honing services if things come out to my satisfaction. :
