It looks like a huge piece of gem quality quartz with lots of inclusions, resembling topaz. Try scratching it with a piece of quartz; if it does not leave a genuine scratch then your stone is probably an Arkansas, IMO. Arkansas stones have a Moh hardness of 7, like quartz. Beautiful!

    Sham,

The article is much longer but what got my attention is when they mentioned the milky light and dark brown swirls and of course the transparent edges.
It sure sounds like one of these doesn't it?

Croaker I have a large piece of Quartz so I took an old hard Arkansas stone and tried to scratch the smooth surface of the Quartz. The Quartz scratched the Arkansas stone fairly easy if this gives you something to make a comparison with.

I have a black stone that seems very, very hard but I don't know how to post photos on these forum posts. I would like a Gold X attached to my posts but someone will have to instruct me as to how to attach photos.
Can you help me with info on how to attach photos ???

Here is another article mentioning M'Cauley's Quarry, it includes what has already been posted by Gunner777 but has some additional background information.

    The Whetstone Quarry

    Kindest regards,
    Alex

Thanks for trying the experiement: when I looked up how to do the scratch test properly, the scratch has to not only be visible but be able to be felt (not a deposit of material from the other substance). Did your scratch rub off easily or did it have to be lapped off? Thanks again for trying it!
