Thread: Barber hones characteristics

Here are my barber hones. I only got 2 atm, so hard for me to say much about them in comparisons to others.
First is Our Very Best, I'd guesstimate it to be in the 8-10k range.
Second is a 2-sided Diamond King hone, guessing it to be in the 4/8k range.
They both work well, I would call them fast cutters and they seem to compliment each other.

Here's a link to a thread with several other books, including a link for this Barber's Manual, that is on a site you DO NOT have to pay to download from. If you're interested in these old books and would like to save a copy for your self, follow the rabbit trail here: http://straightrazorpalace.com/shavi...r-manuals.html
Oh and here's a pic of my Barber's hone...nobody knows anything about it and I'm too inexperienced to offer much either.

Thanked: 19Bracher's Barber Special
Here is one that does not seem to be in this thread. A barbers hone made to look like a coticule. Bracher's "Barber Special" Two sides with the bottom, darker side coarser than the top yellow side. Measures ~1 7/8" wide and 5 3/8" long. Had been used with oil and seems to have a mid-grit bottom and a high grit top. Nice shave-able edge can be achieved, but took a bit of stropping. As many, cuts fast.

my addition to the thread
Just won this guy off Ebay:
American Improved Quality (Three Line Hone) made by American Hone Company - Olean, NY
Average barber size - 2" x 5.25"
Both sides seem to be the same grit to my fingers however, the instructions say the stamped side is actually finer than the flat backside. I haven't used it yet to see because my razors either don't have bevels set or are waiting to come back from the honemeister...
I have the box too but the stupid picture limit per post forced me to delete it.Last edited by TwistedOak; 04-15-2011 at 04:55 AM.

I acquired this little beauty from my father who is a retired Chiropodist. I included the underside of the box where my father had clearly recorded 1985 £2.60! Ah those were the days?
Anyhow grit 9000-1100. Every few weeks 5 or 6 laps is sufficient to bring back the edge.

Thanked: 3795Not a problem, and I'm not the thread police anyway. Just to clarify for you, barber hones were made for razor maintenance. The hone to which you linked is a finishing hone. There is a blurry line between them. A finishing hone can be used for maintenance and a barber hone can be used as a finisher. Hmmm? Sounds like I'm full of crap, doesn't it?
