Naniwa has the superstone combostone in 3k/8k and 1k/5k combos. I saw the 3/8 at SRD. And in my hone drawer by the way.

I think tonight I'll start sharpening up my Wade&Butcher.

Hey guys thanks for all your help, I have a 1k 3k 5k in transit, which according to grit size comparison, and the findings of some people, should get me through most bevel setting and some sharpening pyramids. I can't wait!

You are hearing a lot about Nani's now, because all the honers are checking out something new. I believe that sooner or later everything will come full circle and we might be back to the nortons and the bbw/coticules again eventually. Just MHO.

Doubtful. I have done the last 2000 razors I've honed on the Naniwa Super Stones just because they work so well. I have all the others at my disposal, but it looks like I'll stay with these until something better comes along. When I was using my Shapton Glass and I did a couple thousand on those too, I would sometimes go back to the Nortons for some of the restoration edges, but again have not lately.

Don't get me wrong though as I still really like playing around with all the stones and trying new stuff. I really enjoy all my natural stones as well as playing with the pastes and sprays. What can I tell you.....honaholic.........I sure wish our 12 step program would work........

I'm just going to do it 'till I need glasses.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

In a lot of the threads it sounds like the underlying theme is that the N12k is a good barber-hone substitute (if not better alternative). If I needed more work than the 12k and wanted to drop down, would I have to go all the way to 5k to experience a noticeable difference or would the 8k be enough?

Sounds like a good move for somebody of my skill level would be the 3/8 combo stone and the 12k finisher. Is that too big of a gap between 3 and 8 for a pyramid?

    Thanks.
I think if you want to go that route, you should just get the 8k. The 4k is only for duller blades. The 8k is for polishing, if your blade needs the 4k treatment, you waited too long between honing. IMHO. That said, if you want to do razor restos, you need even more hones. As Glen says, learn to shave off the 8k and the rest will come.

You know, I really think you should try crox. People are able to use only crox for years. Its the same motion as stropping, and you don't have to learn to hone. With crox, you can keep your edge good for a very long time. Then, when the edge gets unacceptable, you can either learn to hone or send it off.

I'm using crox now in conjunction with the swaty and getting decent results. Maybe this is just my on version of the onset of HAD. Crap.

I think I'll get the two combo stones and go from there. And I agree with Lynn.. .everybody who's started on Naniwas is saying that they're working out better than the nortons, shaptons, etc. That's the reason for my considering them... not because they are what's popular.
