Sham,
I use the DGLP on other stones (Norton and naturals as well). It works very well. I am no expert, but I was told that in order to maximize the effectiveness of a natural stone that you want to lap it with something like the DGLP to do the heavy work and then use a 4k stone to do a little more after that. I did that and my Japanese natural stone performs quite well (I've also still been able to use my DGLP effectively as well). My understanding is that the only thing that you want to avoid on the DGLP is lapping anything lower than 500 grit.
Hope this helps

I have used my GDLP for coticules, eschers, my asagi, Norton and of course, Shaptons with no problems at all. Shapton cautions you to avoid using it on coarse grit stones and I don't think I would use it on something really hard like a Spyderco or maybe a barber hone. Other than that, I use mine for everything.

Thanked: 13245Don't wanna rain on anyone's parade but the GDLP should not be used on naturals search out ChrisL's very extensive write up about the plate...at $280 I am not taking a chance..
I use mine on Naniwas, Shaptons, and my Nortons that is all, never anything else...(Nothing under 1k on those either)
The DMT's in 120 and 325 cut everything else down to size...

Glen, I remember Chris having to return a GDLP. I don't recall exactly what he lapped with it. Like Bill S I've done my coticules and Eschers with it routinely along with my shaptons and naniwas, nortons too. So far so good.
I would never lap an unknown natural or synthetic with it though. If it is under 500 grit shapton says don't lap it with the GDLP. I keep it a 1k or above just to be safe. I wonder if Chris might have just got a defective plate ?Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 13245I am sure you guys are probably right and it will work fine....
BUT I have other things to spend $300 on so I follow the directions with all my Shapton stuff... No soap, no hot water, no leaving the stones wet, and no Naturals on my plate
Remember the wife calls me "OCD Boy" for a good reason

DMT D8C, and for tough jobs, like Barber Hones, The D8XX. They're great and multi purpose...and a lot cheaper than the DGLP....
We have assumed control !
