Thread: La Rose Hone

Curious but if all you have is the box bottom what is marked La Rose ? Isn't that a Spanish pronunciation ? Wouldn't French be Le Rose ? Anyhow, if the hone is marked with pencil or ink it may be a coticule but if it is embedded or embossed in the top of the stone on one end I would think it might be a barber hone ?

I think it would take its gender from the fact that it's a stone (ie feminine) but am not sure. Also, pictures please, scrapcan.

It would actually take the feminine gender from the noun "rose" itself. "La rose" is french and is the correct pronunciation. Let me know if the rest of the text on the box is french, I could translate it.

No writing on the box other than the numbers 3269. I too think it is french and that the gender is correct from my long ago study of the language.

Here are some pictures. The black line at right end looks to be a mark form a black felt tip pen, there is not indication of a crack/fissure/etc...

The hone does not appear to have ever been used. A few small chips along the edges but once flattened and chamfered they will be gone with very little work. You can see the small chips in the endview and sideview pictures.

I too experienced a bit of HAD last weekend while presenting a display of antique reloading tools at a gunshow. I picked up this hone, a three line swaty, another hone I will posting in a couple of days, 2 strops, and 6 razors. One razor is a very large and in very nice shape c-mon blackie (I have not measured the width but I think it will be 10/8 or 11/8). But that is another post for another day.

You've got a beautiful natural combo coticule there. Might be glued but sure looks like a yellow/bbw to me. Congratulations and happy honing !

I am hoping to get to put it to use very soon. When I saw it I was not sure what it was, I thought the tan side could be a coticule and I know it is a natural stone. The other side I was not sure if it was a backer or if this is a two sided hone. It is clearly a two piece stone as you can see the natural contact and the seperation line for the second side.

I will prepare both sides and see what happens.

It looks like a coti with a bit of natural, glued to a bbw. Before the split where it is glued, I can see a bit of natural bbw.

I have this one on the way, I'm intriqued as to what the pink is and looks like.

Here's some eye candy for you. The pink coti on the right is the most pink I've ever seen. Pics really don't do it justice. The reverse side is Les Lat, Hybrid. Also, the Tiger striped on the far left, bottom pic, has pink hues to it.
I have many brownish Pink tiger striped coti's, I'll have to post pics. When I sold them, I always kept the interesting ones for myself.

The middle pic shows the pink hybrid coti (Thanks Jimmy!) both sides next to a regular 8x3 boxed from Howard. Howard always had the best Coticules. That one was typical of what you got. Not sure what vein it is, but it's beautiful. I bought that well before vein names became popular. As a matter of fact, that's my first Coticule. The top pic, far right is a Kosher Dressante...Maurice used to write the vein names on the stones for me....And yes, You can see a hint of an Escher next to the Ducks up top....

If your wondering, my go to Coti is at the bottom, 4th in from the left, awesome all around stone, fast, Dressante, has a small vein in it that does not interfere with honing...It's also got a lot of pink in it....

With Coticules, I love hand held honing. I like the feedback I get. 8x3's are great, wonderful bench hones, but a 6x2 or 7x1.5 can be held while your honing.
