If that is a slab of Charnley and you have 4 of them, you're possibly one of the luckiest men I know! You should contact Naifu on this forum as he cut hones out of a huge slab of Hindostan whetstone. He knows the process of hone making.

I'm very interested to see what may come of this.

Wow, if that huge rock is a Charnley then you have a gold mine. Mark me down for one when you get it cut

After reading this thread, my next meeting with Randy is going to involve many more questions regarding hones.

I'm really curious about this making of one's own natural stone hones. I have some pretty good access to some strong cutters. Hmm, might have to try something foolish.

i got about five old grease stones off of ebay and wanted to restore them and ran across a few threads about this subject first one was in a wooden case the stone wasnt glued in the case so i clean up the stone with some comet that got the thick stuff off next i put the stone in a pan put two popsicle sticks under the stone to keep it off the pan and to heat the stone evenly put the fire on and then added some oxi clean to the water got the temp up to about 180 degree's and let it stay at the temp for about ten min. repeated twice all the oil was out of the stone laped afterwords the second stone was glued in to the box so i thought of this thread but wanted to clean the stone first so i scrubed the stone down with some comet after that i wanted to put the stone in the pan and heat it up and add some oxi clean but the stone wouldnt fit in the pan because of the case it was in. and thats when it hit me i'll use the case to hold the stone over the boiling water and let the steam melt out the pine pitch ( the case layed on the pan holding the stone right on the water ) five mins later the stone fell out and the house doesn't stink it worked great

When I have a wood honing box and it is grease/oil stained/filled to clean it I simply use oven cleaner on it. Works a charm.
