Thanked: 67My Charnley is in the oven, and I'm terriffied.
I'm trying to sweat the big green monster out of its box, and several learned honing folks have suggested that I put it in the oven, suspended over a towel at a very low heat. So I'm doing just that.
...and I'm sure that nothing good can come from this except for a foul-smelling girlfriend-enraging disaster, so I figured I'd write you all a note in the hope that I would get some moral support. It's been in there several minutes at 80c.
Please fellow honing babies: show me the love.

I don't know, I have never heard of cooking a cf before, maybe it will flavor your future meals? lol
As far as honing with it have you tried oil? I heard it's the slowest but most effective way to max an edge.
Good luck! Pics?

Thanked: 67I've used water with a drop of dish soap, and it's worked well, so no oil for me.
But now, 20 minutes into my Roast Charnley, it's definitely smelling horrible and the pitch, or whatever foul gunk that's impregnated the wood, has begun bubbling out. The problem with the rock is that it's not level in the box; it's actually listing slightly to one side, which makes it difficult to use. It needs to come out and be re-set!

Thanked: 3795It's a rock. I really don't think you run any risk of harm to the rock at 80C even if you baked it for days. Just be sure to avoid any quick temperature changes. If you do get the rock separated from the box, leave it in the oven and let it cool inside slowly as the oven cools.
You might want to vent the area as some of the VOCs coming into the air from the oil in the stone might be more harmful than your girlfriend.

Thanked: 67It worked!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA YEAH!
It didn't fall out, but the gunk softened up enough for me to wiggle it out. Now, of course, it's covered in pitch and needs a big cleaning. When it cools, which shouldn't be long, I'll try using oven cleaner.

Very cool to know it worked out for ya! Now we need to see detailed photos, for documentary sakes, so future Charnley Foresters know how to wiggle their stones free also!

I was going to suggest basting but glad to hear that it worked. How much more stone did you turn out to have than what was visible before you pulled it from the base ?
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
