Yep, I would not call mine "thirsty" at all
I put mine in the sink full of water as I set up to hone, say maybe 10 minutes then start to hone keeping it wet throughtout the process, if I am doing a full rack of razors (8 max) that takes maybe 1 hour to set those bevels then I let it air dry until the next night,,, So far so good

Yeah, really all I ever soak any more is the Norton. The rest just get a few spritzes and if you are working on a few, by the time you get to the next stone, they are usually ready to go. I normally am doing a dozen at a time and this works out well. I used to think I wanted a pond, but still don't think I'll ever use it if I get one.......lol.

My Chosera 1k doesn't need to be soaked. I spray before I start and again when when I begin to hone 3 or 4 minutes later.
However my Chosera 10k seems to a bit thirsty so I keep a good puddle of water on top of the stone for a good 5 minutes or more.

    +1 on Neil Miller's comments.

My 10K Chosera needs almost no soak time
while the nagura wants a lot.

My 10K even works fine dry to touch up a shaver.
Some people recommend dry for the occasional
    use.

Once it stops acting like a sponge -- hone away.
Watch the wave that you push in front of the edge
that is the easy place to notice if the hone is still
    slurping water.

Just let it dry naturally when done. Wrap
in a cloth and let it dry for storage.

    Hi Dan,

Officially you're supposed to soak the Chosera 1K for 5-10 minutes. I've soaked and I've splashed and the stone is happier when the water has some time to settle in.

But you've already been told that, so I hope you've worked out what's going to work best for you.

With regard to other stones out there, most/all 1K stones need soaking save Shapton (Pro/Kuromaku/Glass/M series) and Naniwa Superstones. Everything else needs soaking.

Stu, who's only tried 17 different 1K stones so far. Only missing a few to complete the set.

(If you want names, I can do that...)

So, It's recommended that Chosera be soaked, much like the others. It seems some folks do, and some don't. I haven't broke down yet, I've been tempted to buy Chosera, but I feel it's just another stone. Can someone please tell me the difference between them and the Naniwa line (other than the obvious, (Thickness, defect free). FWIW, I do use the Naniwa's, and mine have been trouble free, no dishing, no warping, etc...Are the Chosera's faster? If everyone is buying them, There must be something to them....

TBH, I need more stones, like I need a hole in my head.

    Rich,

In my opinion, there is virtually no difference in results between the Naniwa SS 1K and Chosera 1K. The Chosera is a little harder feeling but still not as hard as like using a Shapton on Glass. Wear out your SS first..........unless you just gots ta has one..........lol.

    Have fun,

    Lynn

I've called the Chosera as being akin to rubbing butter into Keira Knightley's belly button...

But honestly, that's all it's got going for it in my opinion. It's "as good as" most anything else out there for speed, dish resistance and quality of finish, but because it's expensive it's a disappointment. If you like a stone that feels great and gives good feedback, then maybe having those virtues is enough to look beyond the simple truth, the Chosera is nothing really special performance wise and the cost is a steep price to pay for a nice feeling stone.

Plus it's a pain to flatten (sticky mud), it's a pain to live with (variable soaking, clogging) and a pain to see what's going on (it's GREEN!).

    Meh.

If you can try one, I'd do it in a second but it's not a stone I'd like anyone to buy blind.

I like the Superstone 1K a lot more than the Chosera, even though they can't be compared at all. Like comparing steak to a hamburger. They're both meat but that's about all they have in common...

Ever since I wore out my SS 1K, I have been using the 1K Chosera and I have not been disappointed with it. It gets used every day. For some, the question of expense is there, but it is 2-4 times as big as the SS stones so you are getting more stone for your money in my opinion. To me the biggest difference between the Chosera stones and the SS is in the feel of using them. One has a soft feel with great feedback and one has a little harder feel with great feedback. I really don't think anyone can go wrong with either of them. I have a set of both just cuz I had to try them out and compare, but for the everyday honer, I am sticking with it will be a preference ting.

    Have fun,
