I already have 1k and 5k Naniwa Superstones, so I guess I should grab a 12k Naniwa... I'm also thinking I should get something like a 325 grit DMT for flattening and to have a really aggressive stone for working out nicks or pinholes in the edge from corrosion... A hazard one runs into when buying from antique stores.

This gets expensive fast... Advice appreciated, as its better to spend money only once!

As far as your UF is concerned, you might be using too much pressure. This seems to be the case in many instances. Try balancing your finish stones on an object which is 1" to 1 1/2" in diameter. Like a bottle cap. And then polish the edge without tipping the stone off of the object. That's how I learned what "no pressure" is. Good luck...............

Try using a couple of squirts of 0.25 micron diamond spray (Straight Razor Designs) on your Spyderco UF.

10 laps or so, then finish on a CrOx pasted strop.

This gives a good edge very quickly

    Have fun !

    Best regards

Pete S in Ala. told me to use .1 micron ferrous oxide. He sent me a Boker finished on a UF with .1 micron fe ox slurry and it shaved very nicely.

    Jerry,

I will have to try the 0.1 micron iron oxide

I have used 0.5 micron CrOx and 0.5 micron Cerium Oxide slurries on the Spyderco UF, and they also give a lovely edge.

    Have fun !

    Best regards

Skip the thin stone with the cheap plastic base and go straight to the "big block" stone. It's a little more expensive, but worth it IMHO. I bought mine here.

I suppose that depends on the number of razors you plan on honing. I have gone through one superstone 1k but I have had no significant reduction in my 8k. I highly doubt that anyone who does not hone professionally will use half of the "thin" 8k in their lifetime. Regarding the base, they may be plastic, but they hold the hone securely and stably. I think they work just fine.

    +1

I only honed about 60-70 razors on my Naniwas (with base)before I went with other options.
I lapped them initially, and pretty much after every honing session. (1-4 razors at a time)

Mine still looks brand spanking new!

I've heard that Lynn has gone thru one or two of them, but that guy hones more razors a week than most will in 5 years

Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Oh, I agree. There is no real practical advantage in the larger stone. I just don't like that cheesy plastic base. That's all.

The Spidy UF will hold the "tooth" of the last thing use to lap or shape it.
A fine grit like 0.5 micron diamond spray will help dial the UF toward its natural
grit. You should not need it but for a couple applications. Submicron grit on
canvas or hard felt strop can tidy up an edge and take it to the next level
and may be the best place to 'spend' the bulk of your diamond spray.
