Although I am not a collector per se, I do have a few that are my favorites and a couple others that are always at my sharpening station. And because I am mostly interested in historical stones and specimen stones I have a fondness for ones with color or interesting grain or some type of story. For instance this kiita below which is an amazing hone and produces devilishly sharp edges. Why is it so thin, only 2-3mm thick although a full size 205 x 75mm length and width?

The next one on the left is a beefy specimen of Nakayama that can be used on both sides and next to it is a historical variegated Ozaki.

Chocolate or caramel color stones are rare, and are not mined anymore and both of these here are very fast cutting and hard stones and very very fine. These two and the previous stones above are all kamisori toishi.

Below are 2 of my regular suita bench stones that I use in most of my progressions, one or the other or maybe both with 20 or 30 strokes on each. The left one is an Ohira from the 1940-50s and the grey marshmallow stone remains a mystery. Taking a photo of all of my stones would requre a panoramic shot because they represent hundreds of pounds.

Alex, I've been eagerly awaiting your contribution to this thread. I had hoped to see a Devonshire oilstone. I guess, since there is no photo of one of those rare birds, it is safe to say you still have your soul.

Ok, so after oggling all these stones I've begun the descent in to hones... I picked this little thing up yesterday for next to nothing and have another Bhone on the way as well as a guanxi. Another month or so and I may have a set of Nortons or Naniwas...
