Of course the BBW and Coticule are both naturals. I think what he referred to was his Coticule slurry stone is actually a natural combination stone of a Coticule and a BBW.
In short his slurry stone is a natural.
The difference in grit with BBW and Coticule is actually really, really small.
I doubt somebody could actually feel a difference and I propose that
in an experiment the variance produced within the test subjects of the same finishing stone (different sharpening techniques etc.) will easily overpower the occurring variances produced by differences between the two finishing stones.
In short: the natural variation produced by technique and slight differences in the edge and skin condition will be greater
than the actual differences between a Coticule and BBW finished edge. I believe Bart had a small research team working on something like that.
They applied a type of analysis of variance and I believe they came to the same conclusion.
@the flaking J-Nat:
Maybe you should post a picture of the spot. Typically these flakes, as long as they can´t be felt do not diminish the edge of a razor.
I don´t think it´s something to worry aboutLast edited by Lesslemming; 09-20-2011 at 12:23 PM.

Sealing the stone will help prevent that from happening, if its not already sealed.
+1
I agree, i cant feel any difference in the final after effect between the two when polishing with them. The only reason why i use the BBW side is my Coticule seems to stick to my stone too much. The BBW seems to stick less, if that makes sense lolLast edited by Brighty83; 09-20-2011 at 12:30 PM.

How big is the chip?
Maybe start a new thread about this stone with pics of the chip and the stone in general?

Chip is tiny & fixed--no factor. Stone feels loads nicer now that it's been lapped--shave test awaits.

Good to hear, are you going to seal it to help prevent that from happening again or was it just bad luck?

Bad luck (& impatience) chamfering is all. Stone is an absolute delight to use! Probably won't do lacquer on the sides as it's extremely dense. Max says you can actually leave them submerged (the super hard ones) & it won't do anything. Won't do that, but I don't worry about a few drops of water running down the sides @ all.

Amazing Shave Today!!!
Test shaved w/ my barber's W&B--hard steel that really needs a superfine finish to come alive--mowed through a 2 day beard w/ no pulling on the chin (a perfectly shave-ready edge normally pulls just a tiny bit there w/ lots of beard growth). Pretty much zero resistance everywhere else--I could hear the cutting, but couldn't feel it!
Very close shave going WTG like Gary says--nothing left after a 3 pass shave. Just for fun, I took a Randall Hall (not finished on this stone) & did a sideburn WTG, then relathered & hit it w/ the W&B--beard stubble in the lather!
Wonderful feeling stone (I'm probably still using too much water, but even then, it feels good) that hones as good as it looks--& it is beautiful! (I'll post a pic in a bit). Big thanks to Max @ JNS!
