Thread: Japanese natural hone help!!!

I sent an e-mail with the photo below to the seller and he said that its normal for bits of the stone to break off with you fingernail and for the to be huge pits in the stone! he said layers are good!

I didn't take the photo below until about an hour or two of lapping when i gave up!

Do you think its worth giving up on it or is it salvageable?

Cut it up and use it as Nagura on better stones.
Or return it if you can ! It looks like c*ap

Simple fact here, you CANNOT hone a razor on a stone that is releasing 'huge' chunks like that, if you can't get past that, then send it back and ask for a refund or another stone...

edit: you know Onimaru55/Oz is in yer neck of the woods and is a J-nat kinda guy, you might send him a pm with a rather simple message "HELP" !!!!

If a working surface of a hone isn't totally uniform and smooth it's unusable. It also should not be friable like that. Maybe it was subject to weathering and the outer areas are just rotted. Maybe if you hone enough you might get to good solid rock. A lot of maybe's there.

You should not go through the trouble of trying to get a smooth, flat surface on a just bought hone. You might get past the chipping or it could get worse. Either send it back for an exchange. let the seller take care of it or get a refund.

I actually have purchased a jnat from onimaru55. It is a great stone!

Anyway, the seller is offering a 50% refund.. it was really hard to get that out of him though and he said he wants me to cancel all my other orders with him lol (about 6) Maybe that's a good thing!

Even with 50% it still an expensive and useless stone (don't ask how much i paid), I might lap some more in the morning.

The seller is one of the worst guys i have dealt with! but at least he is offering some refund, for a stone advertised as suitable for razors

I feel for you but how can you expect a good stone for a few bucks?
My advise is to contact a reputable seller and see what they can do for you.

Maksim has traveler size stones that are not too expensive and will work great for you, he also tests them on razors.

If you used Paypal, you can get a 100% refund, (I hope you used Paypal, and not as a gift) as far as your other orders with him, It's a no brainer dude. Cancel them. How can you be expected to use that for anything, other than slurry stones.

I think it is a sorry deal, the seller should provide you with a full refund. This seller is ink stamping all of his own stones, these stamps are not from the miner (although it is reported that your seller in this case, Nakaoka-san, is running a mine of some sorts), so there should not be any type of restocking fee regarding the loss of the stamps or of the minimal amount of lapping you have done.

I am curious, was this stone purchased off of e-bay? What were the refund terms up front? Alx
