Hone ident help
Hello all,
I recently won a large lot of hones and have lapped only one so far and do not know what it is. If anyone here can help many thanks in advance. It's maybe 1.75 wide 8-9 long. It looks green with two red lines running through it. It was almost flat lapping took 30 min on dmt 325. On one end is swirls of red black and maybe tan. The slurry looked a little greenish maybe with pink in it. I loaded pics of it dry wet and with slurry.

Just one more question I was looking the the stone without my glasses and in the dark swirls at the one end are little bright sparkles almost like tiny flecks of glitter. I didn't notice them as with my eyeglasses on my near vision isn't so great. Is this normal in some charnley's.

Thanked: 3164It isn't present in all charnleys to a pronounced degree, unless you are talking about very tiny glittery particles, which are harmless. The ones with a lot of red in them, particularly red blotches/swirls with a darker core, are often prone to what has been called 'pinny inclusions' that are very hard and glass-like, larger than those tiny glittery specks. These can have an adverse effect on the blade, leaving scratches and a roughish edge. If they are doing this and are localised, they can sometimes be picked out with the tip of a knife - as long as they are below the surface of the hone they will do no damage.
Regards,
Neil
