I opened a fresh roll of some cheap electrical tape I found at a local Dominican hardware store, slapped it on a Beau Brummel, and went to town. I must admit, it didn't have the same "romantic" feel of honing with no tape, but it didn't feel nearly as awkward as I remember. This tape seems more stiff, somehow different from the 3M stuff I've tried. Another problem is slurry getting under the tape at the spine, opening it up; not this stuff. I rather liked it actually. And the shave... !!!!!
So gentlemen, now that I have the market cornered on this magical tape, I'll be taking preorders via PM
Seriously though, I'll be experimenting with tape, w/o tape. I see benefits for either depending on the situation.

Both great tapes for this, IMO.
The 88 is a bit stiffer and therefore my preferred one.
Oddly, while working as an electrician back in the day, I preferred the softer, more flexible 33.

    Both are 3M Scotch tape.

+1, I used to work as Electrician myself, and that's when I was first introduced to 33+ I still use it today. Normally 1 layer when I hone.
    We have assumed control !

I'm using Nitto tape and hone all razors with tape. You definitely get used to it and can ascertain the feel/feedback with practice.

Yep, I felt like I had muffled feedback when I first started using tape, but the brain learns. Good ol' brain.
