My latest acquisition , a beautiful and very big Ohira Renge Suita, from Maksim @ JNS.
The stone has the purple renge but also a spot with black renge, very unique and beautiful. Already lacquered the sides and back.

My lord...its the size of a brick! Beautiful stone! :)
Most of my tomonagura stones came from two jnats that I cut up
I purchased a heap really really cheap and found two were no good for sharpening due to su and flakey layers.
They do work wonders for tomonagura stones though
Stefan
That is a striking stone, Ohia is famous for their renge loaded suita stones. I am happy for you, well done. Alx

Seems I need to update my pics, these are the only 2 pics I could find :/
The oohira I got from Hida Tool in Berkley years ago and I love it for refreashing an edge, a few more lapps on the asagi and it's off the the ready shelf. I need a few more stones but they will have to await better times.
Very generous gift from my stone seller :)
I got it from him on my trip to Japan !!
That one is lv 5+ for sure but need to test it more

I could live with a present like that! :)
I just love looking at the stones in this thread. I find myself browsing it quite often in order to drool.
Just got this one from Maksim who estimates the grit at 15k to 18k which will be used as a pre-polisher before my Nakayama Maruichi [ 30k to 40k ].
It will be glued to a wood base and lacquered. It feels very smooth to the touch. We will definitely try to shave directly off this stone just for fun.

I have that exact same asagi stone! (or is it a brick)

My only jnat, whichi I've recently acquired and still to max it out.

and yes, that's right, I let my coti's and jnat sleep together. Hopefully they'll have a little naticule baby :dropjaw:
I'm going to have to go with BRICK on that one lol. Took me a while to get used to this stone. But now I feel good with it. I have lapped off the kenji but have no worries as I don't intend on getting rid of it. As always I take pics of my stones before lapping them so I have a record.
My latest acquisition.
A perfectly usable to hone on, Botan nagura, very fast after 4k synthetic and leaves very nice edge. I think it is a stone that bridges synthetic to prepolisher gap in a natural progression.

Heck thats just a cool looking stone :)
My latest purchase is in the post from Alex
According to Alex
Attachment 82707Quote:
This is a Vintage Specimen Karasu KAMISORI TOISHI.
This large raw shaped stone is rich kuro (black) on asagi (grey) that is called karusu, an allusion to flying black crows that has grit so fine that it feels like it would not affect steel in any way, but as it turns out it polishes the steel with an amazing ability.
With a light slurry the cutting action is noticeably fast, but with no slurry this is a true polishing stone with a hardness level at Lv5.5
The solid tan lines are typical of some Nayamaya stones and are structurally solid
and do not affect the honing action in any way because the minerals are softer than
the sharpening medium.

I have wanted a Karasu for a while now so i can not wait to get it!!!!! Thanks Alex!
This is not helping my HAD... AT ALL... :p
Yes a Karasu is on my list of NEEDS... Someday I'll bump into the right stone :)
It is addictive, the jnats are just nice to look at and use. This should make my 20th jnat when it arrives :D
Killer looking stone Brighty!
Luckily my Lv5+ Ozuku gives me killer edges, so I have avided J-Nat HAD... Or else I'd be really broke fast! :)
This is my J-Nat, it's a Nakayama Kiita. I got it a few months ago from Alex. It's almost a perfect rectangular and is roughly 6"x2.75"x1". The line you see in the surface does not affect honing at all. I find it works best if I work up a slurry with the small tomonagura (far right in the picture) that I also got from Alex, honing on the slurry while gradually adding drops of water as I go, simply going by feel and not counting laps. I finish on a really light slurry, strop, then rinse the stone off and do some more laps on a thin film of pure water, the strop again. The edge is then uber-sharp. ;)
I have a set of nagura as well, as you can see from the photo. Left to right: Botan, Tenjyou, Mejiro, Koma, and the small piece of finishing stone I use for the final slurry. The second picture is a scan of the surface of the stone. It's a Kiita, but I see distinct blue swirls and patterns! Very pretty.
I have a Ozuku Asagi Lvl 5 in the mail right now. I'm so excited to give it a go!!
My latest arrivals
#1 - Nakayama from Alex - This is quite a hard stone, level 5 +\- and very smooth (its a very nice stone to use)
#2 - Ozaki iro from Alex - I have another stone almost the same as this stone, but this new stone is slightly finer. About a level 4 in hardness
#3 - A Nakayama kiita from Alex - This is a smaller stone and it brings a slurry quite easily and when wet it becomes a bright yellow. This stone is probably a level 4 +\-, fast cutting and has a really nice earthy smell to it.
Brighty. I think you now qualify to have HAD appended to your username but you'd have to get it past Jimmy first :p :)
Hi onimaru, i have too a nagura stone, but it seem to drink water like a camel
How do you use the nagura, and your stone too drink that much water?
Hi Kairen. I only have small nagura for slurry & yes they do like water but I think it was mainaman that has the large nagura. Maybe he can make a suggestion. I think sword polishers wet them as needed when polishing.
Here are another couple to add to my collection
#1 - Nakayama iro from Alex. This is about a level 4 stone and is a fast cutter. This stone has a really strong earth smell, very nice stone to use and seems to give a great pre polishing edge. :D
#2 - Ozaki iro from Alex - This again is about a level 4 stone and is a fast cutter. A very nice stone to use.
And i received my Karasu today (earlier then expected) so here are some photos continuing from the post mentioning the order a few days ago.
I have lacquered, lapped and tested this awesome stone, its very hard (5+) and very very fine, this is easily in my top 2 (or even top 1) finishing stones!
This really is a nice stone!!!
I originally got into JNats for sharpening kitchen "jknives". This, of course is now shifting towards straight razors.

Okay, I'm finally going to set my coticules aside for a bit and give my new jnat a go. I just got this in from Maksim. It is a Ozuku Nashiji San with some very beautiful Nashiji patterns! Very hard and fine stone. I just finished sealing up the back and sides; I still need to lap it after it cures. This size stone is good for hand-holding honing or just using it on the table.

Two more stones in.
First, a small size Aoto, 200x40x40mm clean no inclusions, very smooth feel, range is ~2-4k. Very fast and great after the bevel set step to go to prepolisher.
Second, Atago Akapin Aoto, this one is very similar to the aoto above, but faster. and the finish is may be more in the 3k range.
This is great stone for knives primarily, but can be used for razors too.
I lacquerred both and because they are soft stones I also reinfosed the sides with washi paper.

Well this is my first plunge into Japanese Natural stones and I have to say that it was so worth it. I got this Ozuku Asagi from Maxim a week ago and have enjoyed learning with it and the edges it provides are excellent. Thank you Maxim.
It was listed as a Lvl5 and I have no doubt it is.

The latest edition is a very nice Nakayama Maruichi Kiita, if my history is correct this stone was mined before Nakayama was owned by Kato Family.
I always wanted a Kitta as pure as I can get, this one is pretty close. Very clean yellow color, very soft stone that still produces very fine edge, never seen anything like that before.
