Thanked: 993Here's a question for you both....I don't own a DMT 325 yet, so I was planning on using a glass plate with some 3m wet/dry, starting around 120 and going to 1k.
Do you think I'm on the right track for lapping a charnely, or am I out to lunch? It's worked with Eschers, Phigs and other hones, so I thought I'd give the same method a go here,....but I hear that these are literally "hard as rock"!

I assume this one has been used for razors so it should already be flat or pretty flat and 120 to 1k should do the trick. For dished CFs I always start with sanding mesh.
You should look into backing the CF. It makes it easier to use and will make it a bit less fragile. I recently purchased 2 leftover slate tiles for the same purpose albeit for other stones.

Thanked: 202I have few running CFs around my back garden and they are one of those more durable kind. I would not bother with backin it up. If you decide to usi it wit water than you need to clean and degrease the box too. About the lapping you should be fine wit what you have mentioned just be patient it will take a lot of time and paper. However by any chance you did not buy this hone of fleebay from UK based seller? If yes I believeit could be already lapped to level of 360. this meand you could just top it up.

Thanked: 993
I did get this from the bay, a UK based seller too. Im positive he "sanded" it to around 360, but there was a dish,.....dead center and about the size of an egg on its side.
I started with a Norton lapping stone, and grid lapped it. That did the trick pretty quick, it took about 40 minutes. Then it took another 40 to go from 120 to 2k. I did a grid at 120, 220 and 400, juuuusssttttt to make sure. I was also lapping on 3m paper with glass plate. I took it to 1k, flipped it over and used a dull chisel and blunt knife to remove the old oil and most of the plaster. Then I flipped it back over, chamfered the edges with 800 and 1k, and then back to the glass plate on 1.5k and 2k.
Now.....now it's flat ....and... smooth. I don't think I'm going to back it. I'm going to build a new custom box for her, because she'll be used in an adjustable stone holder like the rest of my collection.

Thanked: 202I thought I saw that hone before. My hone came properly flat from that seller. Don' be shy to show your new box. Inspiration is always welcome.
I have quite few CFs waiting for boxes and i am running out of ideas.
