Default Thuri How should i use it?

Ok i bought a "Vintage" Thuri. First. How can i tell if its vintage? Second. How should i use it in my honing? I move on from nortons reciently to Naniwa's 3,5,8,12k usually then to 16 shapton. Inplace of? after? Slurry?

    Thank you!

i usually use it with light slurry for a number of laps then dilute to finish on plain water.
You have to play with it to figure out what works best for you.
Pics will help may be determine if the stone is vintage or not.

You need to send that Vintage Thuri to me for evaluation. It will take approx 6 months; then I will give you a detailed report.

Pics may help determine if it's vintage or not....Does it have a label?

Anyway, I'd use it with light slurry, then finish with water, and I'd use it after you have a good shaving edge off the 8k. See how it does. The blade and the stone itself will determine how many lapps you need, but I'd start off with 10 with slurry and 10 water, then test....

Also, Sham told me you could use a C12k slurry on a Thury.
I believe, and I may be wrong, but he also said that if your doing more than 20 lapps on those, Your doing too much. YMMV.

Always try and keep this in mind, I hope I get it right

"All Eschers are Thuringens, not all Thuringens are Eschers"

IME when a Thuringen is really good, when you make a light slurry with a DMT and then hone, it makes me think that somebody tossed some smooth Talc on there.. The feel should be very smooth and not gritty... As you dilute out to clear water the feeling should change to a glass like smoothness..

I also use mine that way after the edge is at a shave ready condition - BUT- that is where knowing your stone comes in, some of us are at that condition off an 8k some 10 some 12 or 16 only you can decide..The Thuringen itself will help you do this.

Natural stones need to be worked into your regime, and that is best accomplished by honing a well known razor a few different ways

When I get a new one like that, I normally try to do 10 no pressure X strokes with a light slurry followed by 10 no pressure X strokes with just water after an 8K and then strop and test shave. If the results are a little harsh, I then try the 10 strokes with water only and then strop and test. Sometimes depending on results, I will drop down to 5 strokes and see what happens.

Each stone like this has it's own personality and playing around with it will give you an idea of how it reacts.

    Have fun.

use it after the 16k stone . thats what i do the edge will be keen but the thuri should take the harshness out of a 16k edge imho
