    Default Thirsty Norton 1k

I find that water soaks into my 1k/220 stone too fast. I want to be able to hone on a puddle of water, and see nice swarf on the stone. I'm looking at the Naniwa SS because the chosera is too expensive. Does the SS keep a nice puddle on top of the stone?

IME, The Norton's, Naniwa's and Chosera are thirsty. I soak mine for at least 30 minutes, and keep a spray bottle handy. Stones that normally "puddle" are your naturals, Cotis, J nats, Charnley (without oil)

I soak for a while, then use the spray bottle. The stone gets dry very quick. In a video of Lynn in the honing forum, he hones on a chosera and there is a nice puddle there for about the whole video.

The Chosera wants to drink, but after about 10 minutes in water it holds a nice puddle on top. I wouldn't recommend soaking the Chosera for a long time, as IME the honing surface tends to become slightly soft. I found that about 10 minutes did the trick.

The Norton 1k/220 combo will never stop drinking. I don't think I've ever honed on the 1k where I wasn't spritzing water every couple of strokes. This may also be due to the fact that it's attached to the 220, which is like a sponge.

Especially the 220 is leaky as a sieve.
Just keep pouring on water. Use it on a wet towel perhaps.
