The DMT is on my list now. Never seem to have the 50 bucks though. I use the Norton plate, which I have had for years. Like you, I lap with the 1000 grit stone after the inititial lapping, but I use the 1000 grit norton to sharpen a razor only when it is fresh off the plate itself.

Give it a try. I tried lapping on paper. PITA

Normally, If I'm using wet sandpaper, I wrap it around my DMT plate. It gives you a nice flat surface, and works like a sanding block. I lay the DMT plate with the wet sandpaper on it, in the sink, and rub the hone on it. The few times I've used wet sandpaper on a flat surface, i.e. My countertop, glass plate, piece of marble or tile...etc...
The wet paper stays flat on the surface. The water makes it adhere. Just keep it wet.

I got a DMT because I could not stand to use sand paper anymore. The DMT is a great investment. It also works to raise slurry.
